Description

Wente Vineyards Riverbank Riesling is an estate grown white wine from the Arroyo Seco American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Monterey County. Arroyo Seco, the AVA was created in 1983, is a cool climate wine growing area due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the cooling afternoon sea breezes. The soils are mainly gravel which absorb heat during the daytime and help prevent grapes freezing during the cold nights.

Wente Vineyards was founded by C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, in 1883. Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he purchased 48 acres and planted vineyards. Continuing the 125 years legacy, the winery is managed today by the Fourth Generation of the Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the Fifth Generation, Christine and Karl.

The Arroyo Seco AVA has a feature known as the Arroyo Seco Cone which is a combination of soils, water sources and wind streams which differentiates it from the nearby Salinas Valley and Monterey Appellation. It is a funnel shaped region with steep slopes where the river has cut a deep ravine. On the southern edge of the ravine Riesling flourishes in the deep rocky soils, hence Wente Vineyards Riverbank Riesling. The grapes are carefully harvested and cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain their natural vibrancy. The wine is rested in stainless steel vats for 10 months prior to release.

Wente Vineyards Riverbank Riesling is vegetarian and vegan friendly.
