Yangarra Estate Roussanne is made from 100% Roussanne grapes sourced from vineyards located close to Blewitt Springs in the McLaren Vale. Yangarra have been producing this rare white grape variety since 2007.
Yangarra Estate is owned by Jackson Family Wines (JFW). The Chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines is Barbara Banke who was marrried to Jess Jackson of Kendall Jackson Fame. JFW had a vision to create a global wine company known for its extraordinary premium and luxury wines from many of the greatest wine-growing regions of the world. Indeed, under Barbara’s stewardship they have since become one of the world’s largest, and high quality, wine companies with interests in California (La Crema, Hartford Court, Camelot Highlands and many more), Chile, Italy, France and South Africa with their new Capensis project.
Yangarra Estate was established in 2001 when Jackson Family Wines acquired Eringa Park Vineyard. It is a single vineyards estate located in McLaren Vale and specializes in Southern Rhône varieties with emphasis on the estate’s bush-vine Grenache. The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. Other grapes varieties grown here include well known grape varieties such as Shiraz, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc with some much more obscure varieties (at least in Australia) such as Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Clairette Blanc and Counois. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and refreshing evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic.
The grapes for the Yangarra Estate Roussanne come from two different blocks of vines on the estate: the late ripening Block 6 brings a more restrained and finer expression, whilst the earlier ripening Block 20 lends bolder characters and generosity driven primarily by aspect. The grapes are hand-picked then basket pressed and the earlier free run juice is used for this blend. The un-fined and unsettled juice was then transferred to French oak puncheons (30% new), where it underwent wild yeast fermentation. The wine was matured for 8 months, stirred monthly with the lees retained.
Certified Organic / Biodynamic. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Yangarra Estate Roussanne is a restrained yet vibrant wine with savoury aromatics and stone fruit flavours. Restrained nose of almond skins and a tight, tangy mandarin note on the palate. Overall, a very fine expression of Roussanne.
Try with light chicken and pork dishes, scallops and grilled turbot.
For the cheeseboard, try with a good Brie, Camembert or Comté.
