Mendocino County Vineyards

The exceptional fruit for Edmeades is sourced from a select group of dedicated, small-scale growers in Mendocino County, each bringing unique history and terroir to the blend:

  • Gianoli Ranch: Meticulously tended by owners Mike and Jenny Kelly.
  • Perli Vineyard: A vast 2,000-acre estate owned by Steve Alden and family, featuring a prized 10-acre plot of Zinfandel vines planted back in 1994.
  • Shamrock Vineyard: Comprising 24 acres of vines established in 2001, owned by Dr. Donald Williams and expertly managed by ranch manager Mike Prescott.
  • Piffero Vineyard: A historic site where Ric Piffero lovingly looks after 25 acres of old-vine Carignan and Zinfandel, originally planted by his grandfather, Vittorio, in 1930.

Edmeades, Established 1963

The origins of Edmeades Wines lie with cardiologist Dr Donald Edmeades, who planted 11 acres of grapes in the hamlet of Philo, Anderson Valley in 1963, becoming the first modern-day grape grower in this cool, coastal region. His son, Deron, later founded the Edmeades winery, launching the Edmeades brand in 1972. They soon gained a reputation for producing fantastic single-site and single-vineyard mountain Zinfandels.

Acquisition by Jackson Family Wines

In 1988, Edmeades was purchased by Jess Jackson and became one of the very first wineries to join the Jackson Family Wines portfolio.

Tasting Notes

Edmeades Mendocino County Zinfandel opens with a focused, aromatic bouquet of warm baking spices, led by distinct notes of cinnamon and star anise.

This gives way to a decadent core of rich dark fruits, including luscious blackberries, black currants, and black plums, alongside a hint of chocolate-dipped strawberries.

On the palate, bold yet beautifully integrated tannins enhance the wine’s natural richness, while a refreshing streak of acidity ensures a vibrant, beautifully balanced finish.
