Glenmorangie: A Whisky Icon

Glenmorangie Distillery is one of the most famous Highland Scotch whisky producers and can trace its origins back to 1843. The distillery is located in Tain, a royal burgh in Ross-shire. Distilling in the area is thought to date back to the Middle Ages. Initially a brewery in the 1700s, the site used water from the nearby pure, mineral-rich Tarlogie Springs, which is still used today for Glenmorangie’s smooth, floral whiskies. In 1843, William Matheson transformed it into a distillery, using tall gin stills to produce a refined, light spirit. More stills were added in 1990 and more in 2009, making a total of 12 stills.

A Pioneer of Cask Finishing

Under the ownership of luxury goods behemoth Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) since 2004, Glenmorangie has become a global luxury whisky brand. The distillery pioneered cask finishing in the 1980s, ageing whiskies in ex-Bourbon, Sherry or wine barrels to create complex flavours like citrus, vanilla, and chocolate, as seen in bottlings such as Glenmorangie Nectar or Quinta Ruban. Dr. Bill Lumsden is the Director of Whisky Creation, who blends tradition with innovation to maintain the brand’s stellar reputation, whilst endlessly trying out new cask finishes.

Glenmorangie Lasanta Profile

Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Year Old is aged for 10 years in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks and is then aged for a further 2 years in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. Oloroso Sherry is a fuller and richer style of sherry usually characterised by spicy, nutty, particularly walnut, and caramel notes.

Non chill-filtered for additional aroma and mouthfeel. Bottled at 43% ABV.

Why Is It Called Lasanta?

Lasanta is Gaelic for warmth and passion, a reminder not just of the Spanish provenance of these Oloroso sherry butts, but also a reflection of this expressions lusciously soft texture and deep, enticingly sweet aromas.

Tasting Notes

From Glenmorangie:

Colour: Rosewood

Aroma: Rich, aromatic, spicy and deep, with notes of mead, honeycomb, walnut and a touch of charcoal. A splash of water opens up the powerful bouquet, revealing some more floral and fruity top notes, like carnation, flowering currants, chocolate-coated raisins, baking bread and toffee.

Taste: A sizzling, spicy mouthfeel leads into a burst of rich flavours such as Brazil nuts in toffee, molasses, charcoal, cinnamon and clove, with a background of leather, oak tannins and dark chocolate.

Finish: Long and lingering, with hints of Seville orange marmalade, dates and treacle.
