Marimar Estate La Masia is a definitive expression of the Don Miguel Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. This Californian Pinot Noir is crafted from 100% estate-grown fruit and represents a sophisticated single-vineyard answer to the complexity and finesse of fine red Burgundy. This wine offers vibrant red fruit with forest floor complexity and elegant structure.
Marimar Estate’s Don Miguel Vineyard is now 100% Organic. The wine is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
The owner of Marimar Estate is Marimar Torres, the sister of Miguel Torres, patriarch and CEO of the world-famous Torres Wine company in Spain. Marimar Torres began planting vines in 1986, and it is the only Californian vineyard to be planted in the European style.
There is high-density planting, and the vines are planted on a southwest-facing vertical training system. The grafts are Phylloxera-resistant, and the planting density is 5000 vines per hectare, about four times that of traditional Californian planting density. These characteristics favour competition among plants and roots, reducing yield in the plants. The vines live longer in this way and develop more intense, elegant aromas, greater flavour concentration and greater balance. The winery was completed in 1992 and sits on a hill surrounded by the estate vineyards.
The winery concentrates mainly on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but in a nod to Marimar’s Spanish roots, a Tempranillo and an Albarino have recently been added to the portfolio.
This Californian Pinot Noir is named “La Masia”, which means “the farmhouse” in the language of Catalan from Marimar Torres’ home region in Spain. The winery is designed to look like a classic Catalan farmhouse.
This Russian River Pinot Noir has a bright classic colour and nose, reminiscent of raspberries and black cherries, with savoury notes of orange peel and sage, sandalwood and sassafras. The palate has scents of violets and orange blossoms, with soft tannins that promise a long life.
The wine will continue to develop for another 10-15 years, maybe more. Serve at cellar temperature, between 58-60° F.
La Masia Pinot Noir wine pairs with roasted or grilled poultry, including chicken or quail, especially dishes prepared with fruit accents such as apples or pears.
It is also a great match with earthy mushroom-based recipes, duck and lamb recipes or creamy cheeses such as Brie on crostini with figs.
