Foursquare Mandamus is labelled as a single-blended rum, which means that it is a blend of double retort pot still and traditional continuous twin column rums from a single distillery.
Mandamus has a rich Port Cask influence.
Foursquare Rum is produced by R L Seale, one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, a family-owned business whose involvement in rum-making extends from father to son since 1820. The owner and talented head distiller, Richard Seale, is one of the region’s most innovative distillers and blenders and has a passion for producing perfect rum with great flavour. He also campaigns for clarity in the labelling of rums and produces Doorly’s and R L Seales rums.
The Foursquare Distillery occupies the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1636 and, as one of the most modern and efficient rum distilleries in the world, is designed to be both highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Foursquare rum is made from locally owned and sourced sugar cane converted to molasses, fermented very slowly over 44 hours with South African yeast and then distilled. The rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums. The pot still rum brings complexity and flavour, whilst the column still rum adds balance and aroma.
The Exception Cask Selections from Foursquare Rum Distillery are a handpicked collection of limited-edition rums chosen by Master Distiller Richard Seale. These rare releases are crafted only when the quality meets Seale’s exacting standards. Each ECS bottling is one-of-a-kind, only available for a limited time, and showcases truly unique approaches to both Rum blending and maturation.
In 2025, Foursquare distillery was named as the International Spirits Challenge’s “Rum Producer of the Year” for the 10th consecutive year.
From Practical Law, “Mandamus refers to a writ issued by a court ordering a lower court (or governmental entity) to properly carry out a nondiscretionary ministerial function.” I wonder what Richard could be referring to?
From Peter Holland, Foursquare Brand Ambassador (UK):
Nose: A rich rush of blackberries, ripe pineapple, tart plum and cherries. Lots of sultanas, vanilla caramel, along with ginger, hazelnuts, walnuts and blackcurrant vines.
Palate: Soft and sweet on to the palate, lots of juicy ripe black cherries, raspberries and Victoria plums. More sultanas and a hint of zesty orange.
Finish: Bitter chocolate and black tea. White pepper and a hint of chilli pepper warmth in the long-lasting, toasty, gently smoky, okay grip.
