Château Ségur du Cros, Loupiac 2023 is a hidden gem of a Bordeaux sweet wine, produced by the SA Vignobles Michel Boyer, one of Loupiac’s most respected winemaking names.
Crafted primarily from old-vine Sémillon with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, the 2023 vintage is a masterclass in balance, delivering all the honeyed decadence, fruit purity and the silky elegance of neighbouring Sauternes at a fraction of the price, while remaining wonderfully fresh and lifted on the palate.
This is essentially the “second wine” of Château du Cros, made by the same talented winemaking team using fruit from younger vines or vineyard plots that yield a lighter, brighter, and more immediately approachable style. Buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
The magic of Ségur du Cros lies in the location of the vineyards: they are situated just across the Garonne River from Sauternes and Barsac. Here, the autumn morning mists created by the meeting of the cool Ciron River and the warmer Garonne encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot). This natural phenomenon dehydrates the berries on the vine, concentrating their sugars, flavours, and acids to perfection.
Château du Cros is the flagship estate of the Boyer family, who have championed fine winemaking in Bordeaux for four generations. Alongside Cros, the family’s small boutique collection includes Château Haut Mayne in Cérons and Château Clos Bourbon in Paillet. Situated in the historic Loupiac appellation, Château du Cros is thoughtfully managed by Catherine Boyer, with consulting oenologist Henri Boyer bringing his expertise to every vintage.
The estate encompasses 85 hectares, with 65 hectares under vine across sun-drenched clay-limestone slopes and elevated plateaus. The soils comprise a blend of limestone, clay, and gravels which impart a distinctive mineral edge and firm structure to the wines. With an average vine age of 35 years and a planting density of 6,600 vines per hectare, the low-yielding old vines deliver fruit of outstanding concentration, purity, and character.
Perfect as a dessert all on its own, but it is also a versatile wine for food pairing.
Serving Tip: Enjoy chilled at 10°C–12°C. If you don’t finish the bottle in one sitting, simply re-cork it and pop it in the fridge; the natural sweetness and vibrant acidity will keep it tasting fresh for a week or so.
How does Loupiac compare to Sauternes?
Loupiac sits just across the river from Sauternes and shares the exact same misty microclimate that produces noble rot. The resulting wines offer very similar notes of apricot, honey, and marmalade, making Loupiac one of Bordeaux’s greatest hidden secrets for world-class dessert wine at a brilliant price point.
Can Château Ségur du Cros Loupiac 2023 be cellared?
While it is wonderfully vibrant and delicious to drink now, its balance of sweetness and acidity allows it to age gracefully in a cool cellar for 8 to 15+ years, where it will develop deeper amber hues and complex secondary notes of dried fig, toffee, and toasted nuts.
