Description

Niepoort Crusted Port

Niepoort Crusted Port is one of the finest alternatives to a declared Vintage Port, delivering the depth, power, and structured complexity of a premium Port wine at a considerably more accessible price. This edition is packed full of blackberry, black cherry, plum and dark chocolate, combined with spice, liquorice and fine tannins. Full-bodied with remarkable freshness and a long, elegant finish.

Crusted Port: A Blend of Vintage Ports

Crusted Port is one of the oldest styles of Port still produced today. It is blended from wines of Vintage quality drawn from two or three harvests, bottled unfiltered and matured in the bottle for a minimum of three years before release, ensuring that none of the rich fruit character, structural tannins, or deep colour compounds is lost in the process. The result is a full-bodied wine of real purity, true to its Douro Valley origins and built to reward patience.

Decanting Required

As the name suggests, Crusted Port throws a natural sediment during bottle ageing and will require careful decanting before serving.

Niepoort Crusted Port Vinification

  • Harvest: Grapes were hand-picked from low-yielding old vines to guarantee fruit quality.
  • Vineyards: Sourced from prime, old-vine vineyards situated around Niepoort’s Vale de Mendiz winery and other old vineyards in the Pinhão Valley within the Cima Corgo region.
  • Traditional Foot-Treading: The grapes were foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares at Vale de Mendiz with 100% stems included to build a firm, ageworthy tannin structure.
  • Maturation: Patiently aged in large, seasoned wooden vats within the historic lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia before being blended.
  • Bottling Date: Bottled in December 2021.
  • Vegan & Vegetarian Friendly: Completely unfiltered and unfined, ensuring it is fully suitable for both vegans and vegetarians.
  • Production: Only 9,800 bottles were produced.

About Niepoort Vinhos

Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, Niepoort Vinhos has grown over six generations into one of Portugal’s most respected wine producers. Small by the standards of the Port trade, they are arguably second to none in quality. The Niepoort family’s dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainable practices has helped them maintain their reputation as one of the top wine producers in Portugal and beyond.

For much of the modern era, the company was shaped by the vision of the legendary Dirk Niepoort, whose influence took Niepoort from a celebrated Tawny Port house into one of the great Vintage Port producers. In 2021, the winemaking reins passed to his son Daniel van der Niepoort, while siblings Marco and Ana have also joined the family business, ensuring the sixth generation is firmly at the helm.

As James Suckling has noted: “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors, but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.”

It has been a long wait; the last Niepoort Crusted, the 4th edition, was bottled in 2014! Order Niepoort Crusted Port today and discover one of Portugal’s finest traditional Ports. Enjoy UK delivery or visit Fareham Wine Cellar for expert advice.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby red with youthful intensity and the first hints of garnet at the rim.

Nose: Expressive aromas of black cherries, ripe plum, blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, liquorice, dried herbs and sweet baking spice, underpinned by distinctive Douro minerality.

Palate: Rich and concentrated with layers of black fruits, cocoa, spice and subtle floral notes. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide structure, while fresh acidity keeps the wine vibrant and balanced. The finish is long, elegant and complex.

FAQS

What is a Crusted Port?

Crusted Port is a traditional style of Ruby Port made from wines of two or three different vintage harvests. It is bottled unfiltered and without fining, then aged in bottle, where it forms a natural sediment or “crust.”

Is Crusted Port similar to Vintage Port?

Yes. Crusted Port shares many of the same characteristics as Vintage Port, including bottle ageing, unfiltered bottling, and good ageing potential. The main difference is that it is blended from more than one vintage rather than a single declared year.

Does Niepoort Crusted Port need to be decanted?

Yes. Niepoort Crusted Port should be decanted before serving because it throws a natural sediment as it ages in bottle. Stand the bottle upright first, then pour it carefully into a decanter to leave the sediment behind.

How long can you keep Niepoort Crusted Port once opened?

Once opened and decanted, Niepoort Crusted Port is usually best enjoyed within about a week. Keep it in a cool place or in the refrigerator to help preserve freshness.

How long can Crusted Port be cellared for?

When stored properly, Crusted Port can often be cellared for 20 years or more, depending on the producer and vintage composition.

Where can I buy Niepoort Crusted Port?

It is available to order online and buy in-store at Fareham Wine Cellar.
