Niepoort Rabbit Dry White Port is a sophisticated, dry expression of Douro white grapes. It is part of the “Niepoortland” range (alongside Ruby Dum and Tawny Dee). Unlike more commercial white ports, this white Port undergoes a lengthy skin maceration to extract maximum character and is then aged in small, old oak casks in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Perfect as an aperitif or served in a Portonic. Elegant, nutty and beautifully fresh, it is perfect served as an aperitif or in a classic Portonic. Niepoort Vinhos is one of Portugal’s most revered wine and Port producers, small in size but second to none in quality. The house was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort from Holland, and the company has remained family-owned for five generations. Today, the house is led by the visionary Dirk Niepoort, whose three children, Daniel, Marco and Ana, have all joined the business. Daniel, the eldest, has been involved in winemaking at the company since 2020.
Despite being among the smallest shippers in the Port trade, Niepoort has earned a place alongside the greatest Vintage Port producers in the world. As James Suckling once wrote, “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne” – a small house in a world of large competitors, producing outstanding wines that very few can match. Niepoort are famous for its aged Tawny Ports (Colheitas and Garrafeiras) but also has an enviable reputation for its Vintage Ports, which are made at the Vale de Mendiz winery in the Douro Valley. That is not to mention their world-class still wines!
Niepoort Rabbit Dry White Port is available in half bottles, which are also available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Deep golden in colour, Niepoort Rabbit Dry White Port opens with an inviting aroma of nuts and almonds that carries through to the palate, where the extended ageing in small old oak casks adds a fresh, concentrated depth and a clean, spirited finish.
