Chateau Troplong Mondot is one of the biggest and most famous Grand Crus Classés in Saint-Emilion. It is ranked as a Premier grand cru classé B in the Classification of St Emilion wine. The winery is located in the Right Bank of France’s Bordeaux wine region in the commune of Saint-Émilion, next to Château Pavie.
In the 17th century, the property, then known as Mondot, was part of the de Séze family estate. Indeed, the chateau that remains at the property today was built by Abbe Raymond de Seze. The chateau was eventually bought by Raymond Troplong in 1850 and was renamed Chateau Troplong Mondot. Belgian George Thienpoint, bought the chateau 3 years later then, in 1936 Parisian wine merchant Alexandre Valette, became the owner. The estate remained in the Valette family until 2017 when the estate was bought by SCOR, a leading French insurance company, who have invested in a significant program of renewal. New cellars are due to be completed in 2020 and more vineyard acreage has been purchased their neighbours, Chateau Bellisle Mondotte and Clos La Barde.
Today the Chateau Troplong Mondot estate consists of 43 hectares at the top of a hill with a gentle south west aspect overlooking the village of St Emilion. The vineyards are planted with 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon on limestone clay soils enhanced with sedimentary fragments of flint and chalk. The vintage is entirely hand picked.
Chateau Troplong Mondot 2010 is an assemblage of 83% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.
