Castiglion del Bosco Rosso di Montalcino is 100% estate-grown Sangiovese. It is the little brother to the estate’s Brunello di Montalcino, a lighter and fruitier style of Italian red wine.
The Castiglion del Bosco estate, which stretches over some 1800 hectares, with 62 hectares of vineyards, is owned by Massimo Farragamo, Chairman of Italian luxury goods producer Salvatore Ferragamo. The estate is one of the most prominent in Montalcino and can trace its history back 400 years. In 1967, Castiglion del Bosco was one of seven founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has undergone several changes in ownership in the last 30 years until Ferragamo bought it in 2003. To say that a lot of money has been spent on improving the estate and wine-making facilities would be an understatement.
The Sangiovese grapes are sourced from an area of the property called Gauggiole, where the vineyards are located at 250m above sea level and are south/south east facing. The soil is mostly clay, and the climate is hot and dry in the summer with wetter winter and spring conditions. These conditions combine to produce a fresh, fruity, aromatic Sangiovese.
Winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco is managed by Cecilia Leoneschi, who has been at the winery since 2003 and who oversees both the vineyards and the cellar. Cecilia is supported by the experienced oenologist Nicolò d’Afflitto.
Castiglion del Bosco Rosso di Montalcino DOC displays a vibrant ruby hue, with fresh cherry and pomegranate aromas, hints of violet, and peppery spice. It’s balanced palate offers crisp acidity, smooth tannins, and a medium body with ripe fruit and a long, spicy finish.
