Description

Castiglion del Bosco Rosso di Montalcino is 100% estate grown Sangiovese. The Castiglion del Bosco estate, which stretches over some 1800 hectares, with 62 hectares of vineyards, is owned by Massimo Farragamo, Chairman of Italian luxury goods producer Salvatore Ferragamo. The estate is one of the most prominent in Montalcino and can trace its history back 400 years. In 1967 Castiglion del Bosco was one of seven founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has undegone several changes in ownership in the last 30 years until Ferragamo bought it in 2003. To say that a lot of money has been spent on improving the estate and wine making facilities would be an understatement.

The Sangiovese grapes are sourced from an area of the propert called Gauggiole, where the vineyards are located at 250m above sea level and are south south east facing. The soil is mostly clay and the climate is hot and dry in the summer with wetter winter and spring conditions. These conditions combine to produce a fresh, fruity, aromatic Sangiovese. Winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco is managed by Cecilia Leoneschi who has been at the winery since 2003 and who oversees both the vineyards and the cellar. Cecilia is supported by the experienced oenologist Nicolò d’Afflitto.

The entire vinification process is carried out in Castiglion del Bosco’s cellar which is completely gravity-fed. Grapes are harvested and transported to winery in 20kg crates where they undergo careful hand selection at sorting tables at the winery priory to pressing. The Rosso di Montalcino is aged for 6 months in French oak barrels, 20% new and 80% in second fill barriques. The wine is then bottled and then aged a further 6 month in bottle before release to market.
