Chateau La Tour de By, A Historic Médoc Estate

Chateau La Tour de By is one of the most celebrated estates in the Médoc, with a history stretching back to vineyards first planted on the site in the 1700s. Located at Bégadan in the northern Médoc appellation, the estate sits just 200 metres from the Gironde estuary, a proximity that plays a defining role in the character of its wines.

Purchased in 1965 by the Pagès, Lapalue and Cailloux families, the estate eventually passed entirely to the Pagès family when Marc Pagès acquired full ownership in 1999. Today it is managed by his grandson Frédéric Leclerc, who joined in 2005, and cousin Benjamin Richer de Forges, who joined in 2009, bringing fresh energy while honouring the estate’s deep-rooted traditions.

Vineyards

At 109 hectares, La Tour de By is one of the largest estates in the Médoc, with an average vine age of 45 years. The vineyards are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot across two principal sites: 65 hectares at Bégadan on gravelly soils and 44 hectares at St Christoly on gravel, clay and limestone. The grand vin draws principally from the Bégadan parcels.

  • Reduce waste – enjoy a perfect portion without the risk of finishing an open bottle
  • Ideal for one or two people – equivalent to around two large glasses
  • Great for gifting – half bottles make elegant, affordable wine gifts
  • Perfect for tasting – try multiple wines alongside a meal without over-committing
  • Cellar variety – stock a wider range of vintages and styles in less space
  • Fine wine occasions – treat yourself to a premium Bordeaux mid-week without a full bottle commitment

Tasting Notes

Chateau La Tour de By has a deep colour with violet hints. The nose is fresh and expressive, leading with ripe bigarreau cherry before opening up to reveal violet, dark chocolate and mocha notes alongside the oak.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful with smooth, well-integrated tannins and good acidity keeping the wine balanced and focused. The finish is long and persistent.

Food Pairing

This wine is a natural partner for classic French and British roasts: rack of lamb with rosemary, roast beef with all the trimmings, or a slow-braised beef short rib. The Cabernet-driven backbone also stands up well to mature hard cheeses such as Comté or Cheddar, while the Merlot in the blend adds enough softness to complement duck confit or venison.
