Calem 1977 Vintage Port is made by Porto Calem, a long-established Port shipper. A Vintage Port from one of the great vintages of the last century.
Porto Calem was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Calem, Porto Calem and initially only shipped wines (using their own fleet) to Brazil in exchange for various Brazilian exotic woods. Brazil remains a very important export market. Since 1998, Calem Port has been part of Sogevinus SGPS, S.A., who also represent Kopke, Barros and Burmester Ports.
Porto Cálem produces a wide range of Port wines, including Tawny, Ruby, White and Vintage styles. The winery is particularly famous for its wood-aged Tawny Ports, particularly their Colheita Ports. They are also well-known for their Velhotes Port brand. Launched in 1934, today it is the top-selling Port in Portugal with over 3 million bottles sold annually.
Calem have vineyards and sources high-quality grapes in the Douro region, especially in Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas. Their Quinta, Quinta do Arnozelo, is located here. The winery, located on the south bank of the Douro River, spans 300 hectares, 100 of which are dedicated to “A” class vineyards growing varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca.
After the vinification of their Ports in the Douro, the ageing of Porto Cálem Wines takes place in the company cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. A major tourist attraction, welcoming around 250,000 visitors annually, the cellars are located on the Douro opposite the Porto Ribeira (historical riverside of the city), next to the Luiz I bridge. The cellars show perfect conditions to successfully age the Port Wines.
Calem 1977 Vintage Port will require decanting. Learn how to decant Port wines here.
