W & J Graham’s Port was founded in Oporto, Portugal’s second city, in 1820 by the two brothers William and John Graham and for nearly two hundred years Graham’s Ports have been made by just two families, the Grahams and the Symingtons – in 1970 the Grahams sold the company to The Symington Family who brought with them their own rich heritage in the Port trade – they also own Dows, Warres and Cockburns. Grahams is considered to be one of the very best Port Houses.

Grahams Six Grapes Reserve Port is a Ruby Port. Ruby Ports are normally aged for up to three years in barrel before bottling. Ports labelled as “reserve” are premium Ruby Ports approved by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto’s tasting panel. This Port is crafted from a blend of classic Port grape varieties, including the primary varieties of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (also known as Tempranillo), and Tinta Barocca, along with some lesser-known varieties such as Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cao, Sousao, and Tinta Francisca. These grapes are sourced from all four of Graham’s Quintas, including the flagship Quinta dos Malvedos, and are harvested at the peak of ripeness and maturity. The different grape varieties and parcels are vinified separately to ensure greater control over the final blending process.

Six Grapes is aged in barrels for a slightly shorter period compared to other Reserve Ports. The Graham’s blending team aims to preserve its youthful character, with its blackberry fruit notes and fresh aromas of cassis and liquorice. After vinification, in the spring following the vintage, the wine is transported from Malvedos to the lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, where it ages for approximately two years in seasoned barrels before blending, aiming for consistency.

Why is it called Grahams Six Grapes Port?

The famous Six Grapes symbol dates back to the 19th century. Following each harvest, Graham’s winemakers would mark the barrels with grape symbols to rate the port. ‘Six Grapes’ would denote that the wine inside was the most complex, structured, and balanced – and had Vintage Port potential. By the early 1900s, Graham’s began producing a reserve port selected from these barrels and it remains their signature reserve style.

Tasting Notes

Grahams Six Grapes Reserve Port has a lovely, clear, dark red colour. The nose has seductive rich aromas of ripe plums and cherries. On the palate, it is complex, with a good structure and a long lingering finish.

Food Pairing

This is a great Port to serve with some dark chocolate or desserts made with dark chocolate and / or dark berry fruits.

This is also great with mature cheeses.

Graham’s Vintage Port Bond

The Graham’s Vintage Port Bond is an innovative offering that allows individuals to purchase vintage port in the year of its harvest, making it an ideal gift for marking special occasions such as births, weddings, or graduations. It is a “futures” option, a bit like “en primeur.”

Traditionally, vintage port is declared and released approximately 18 months after the harvest, but with the Port Bond, you can secure your allocation in advance. You can choose between a single bottle or a case of six bottles of Graham’s Vintage Port, and in years when only a Single Quinta Vintage is produced, the bond entitles the holder to magnum bottles of Grahams Quinta dos Malvedos instead.
