The Baron de Sigognac 1966 Vintage Armagnac makes a fantastic birthday or anniversary present for anyone celebrating a 1966 milestone. As a spirit defined by time and tradition, this vintage captures the essence of a single year’s harvest, matured to perfection. Buy 1966 vintage Armagnac and many more vintage Armagnacs at Fareham Wine Cellar.
The Guasch family, owners of Baron de Sigognac, have deep roots in Gascony dating back to the 12th century. Since 1974, they have owned Château Bordeneuve, where they operate as one of the region’s premier producers. Today, the father-and-son team of Jean-Claude and Thomas oversees every stage of production, from viticulture to distillation.
The Domaine is unique in the region because its entire production is dedicated to Armagnac rather than wine. Their vineyards are located in Bas-Armagnac, a sub-region many connoisseurs believe produces the finest spirits.
There is one short column, alembic still at the Domaine (almost 100 years old), which produces up to 50 to 60 casks of new spirit annually. The wine is distilled on its lees and drawn off at 55 to 58%, depending on the harvest. Distillation is continuous through day and night and manually controlled to account for temperature and humidity changes.
Once distilled, the clear, colourless spirit is aged in new oak barrels for nearly a year. It is then transferred to older barrels for a longer, slower maturation. It is here, in the barrel, that the Armagnac leaches vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak, which lend the spirit colour and flavour. The depth of colour and complexity of flavour increase as the spirit ages in cask; the colour can range from pale straw to rich amber.
As Armagnac ages, it becomes darker in colour and softer, smoother and more elegant on the palate whilst aromas and flavours of prunes, violets, fig, honey, butterscotch and rancio develop. Part of the alcohol evaporates naturally during the long years in cask – this is known as “la part des anges” (the angel’s share).
A 1966 Armagnac makes a meaningful and memorable gift for anyone celebrating a milestone year. Unlike blended spirits, vintage Armagnac is produced from a single harvest, making each bottle a true reflection of time and place.
With nearly six decades of ageing, this rare spirit delivers a refined and complex tasting experience that cannot be replicated.
Baron de Sigognac 1966 Vintage Armagnac is available in strictly limited quantities. Each bottle is presented in a traditional wooden gift box, making it an exceptional keepsake for any collector.
After six decades of maturation, this 1966 vintage has evolved into a spirit of immense depth and “rancio” character—that elusive, savoury richness found only in very old brandies.
Appearance: A deep, burnished copper with mahogany highlights and oily “legs” that coat the glass.
Nose: Initially intense and concentrated. It opens with rich aromas of stewed prunes, dried figs, and dark chocolate. As it breathes, more delicate notes of pressed violets, old leather, and sandalwood emerge, underpinned by a hint of toasted walnut.
Palate: The texture is exceptionally smooth and velvety. Bold flavours of caramelised orange peel, butterscotch, and clove are balanced by a sophisticated oak structure. The mid-palate reveals the classic Bas-Armagnac earthiness.
Finish: Incredibly long and warming. The finish lingers with echoes of liquorice, roasted coffee, and a gentle wood spice that persists for several minutes.
Serve at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass. The narrow rim concentrates the delicate floral and fruit aromas.
It is a good idea to allow the spirit to breathe for 10 to 15 minutes in the glass before serving so that it can open up.
Do not chill or overwarm. If it is too cold for your taste, the warmth from cupping your hands around the glass should be enough to gently warm the Armagnac.
Armagnac can be paired with certain desserts and savoury combinations (or with a good medium to full bodied cigar, like a Romeo Y Julieta Short Churchill).
Dessert: Try with a dark chocolate fondant or a traditional Gascon apple tart.
Savoury: pair with strong, creamy blue cheeses like Roquefort or a well-aged Comté.
Does 1966 Vintage Armagnac come in a gift box?
Yes. Each bottle is presented in a traditional wooden gift box, making it ready to give as a birthday or anniversary present.
Is 1966 Armagnac widely available?
No. Vintage Armagnac from a single year is produced in only strictly limited quantities and stocks, and older vintages, like this, are now becoming quite rare. Buy sooner, rather than later!
How should I serve vintage Armagnac?
Serve at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass and allow it to breathe for 10 to 15 minutes before drinking. Do not serve too coool. If needed, the warmth of cupping the glass in your hands is enough to open up the aromas.
How long will Vintage Armagnac keep once opened?
Spirits do not go off once opened like wines. It does oxidise, but quite slowly. It will generally keep for at least 12+ months before significant changes in character occur.
