What Is Scurvy Grass?

Scurvy Grass, Latin name Cochlearia officinalis, is a species of flowering plant in the family Brassicaceae. The Vitamin C-rich plant, which was historically used by sailors to prevent scurvy, was dried in bundles or made into distilled extracts to take on ships.

Sustainability

The company is dedicated to sustainability and has recently moved to bottles made from Wild Flint Glass, which are made from 100% post-consumer recycled content (PCR). This has decreased each bottle’s weight by 400g and has greatly reduced the carbon footprint.

About Wrecking Coast Distillery

Wrecking Coast Distillery is a small-batch craft spirits producer based in Tintagel, Cornwall, specialising in premium gins inspired by the region’s dramatic, rugged coastline – known historically as the “Wrecking Coast” for its shipwrecks, maritime folklore, and tales of “wreckers” salvaging goods from stormy shores.

As well as gins, the company also bottles rums and vodkas distilled with Cornish Natural Spring Water. The gins are all distilled and bottled in Cornwall, using high-quality base spirit and carefully selected botanicals with a nod to the rugged Cornish coastline. They are perhaps most famous for their Clotted Cream Gin, but the distillery also produces a London Dry Gin, this 57% Navy Strength Gin, Summer Strawberry Gin, a White Spiced Rum and a Rye Whiskey bottling.

Wrecking Coast Cornish Spirits are produced and owned by the RRS Group. As well as Wrecking Coast Spirits, the company also owns two more distilleries:

Portsmouth Distillery – Located at Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth. Maritime soul in a historic naval fort setting. Specialists in rum who also produce gins which include foraged coastal botanicals. Their full range is available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Verdant Spirits – Located in Dundee, producing classic spirits including a London Dry Gin (the first gin to be distilled in Dundee), premium rum and vodka.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Complex and inviting – vibrant juniper, zesty citrus (lemon and lime), subtle peppery spice from scurvy grass, and hints of liquorice.
  • Palate: Robust and full-bodied with bold juniper upfront, bright citrus burst, peppery warmth, gentle bitterness, and touches of spice and earthiness. The scurvy grass adds a unique, fresh, green edge without overwhelming.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and clean – peppery heat lingers with citrus and subtle herbal notes.

To Serve

Try Wrecking Coast Scurvy Navy Strength Gin in a powerful Navy Gin and Tonic, Martini, Negroni, Classic Gimlet or the signature serve, a refreshing Long Gimlet (gin, lime cordial or juice, ice, topped with fizzy water or lemonade)

FAQs

What is Navy Strength Gin?

It is gin bottled at 57% ABV. The name comes from the 18th-century Royal Navy requirement that spilt gin must not prevent gunpowder from igniting. It is prized today for its intense, bold botanical flavour.

Why is Navy Strength Gin 57% ABV?

This was the historic “proof” limit. At 57% ABV, gunpowder soaked in the spirit will still explode, ensuring shipboard safety and alcohol quality in the 1800s.

What does scurvy grass taste like in gin?

It is a coastal botanical with a peppery, green, and herbal flavour similar to watercress. It adds a fresh, savoury maritime edge to gins like Wrecking Coast Navy Strength.
