Yellow Chartreuse Liqueur, like its more powerful sibling, Green Chartreuse, is quite remarkable, considering that it is also made from entirely natural ingredients. It combines the scent of woodland flowers, anise and citrus with a pronounced honey flavour, achieving a delicate balance of sweetness and alcohol.
The story of Chartreuse Liqueurs begins in 1605 when the Carthusian monks at Voiron near Grenoble received a manuscript containing the formula for an “elixir of long life.” This formula was refined through the years and Green Chartreuse, as we know it today, was created in 1840. The liqueur is named after the Grande Chartreuse monastery, nestled in the Chartreuse Mountains. Only three monks know the identity of the 130 plants, how to blend them and how to distil them into this world-famous liqueur. They are also the only ones who know which plants need to be macerated to produce the natural colours, flavours and aromas. And they alone supervise the slow ageing in oak casks. Other products include a highly concentrated and potent version (69% ABV), considered a medicinal tonic called Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse, there are extra aged versions and a Genepi.
Chartreuse is based on grape spirit flavoured, using a secret recipe, with 130 plant extracts, herbs, flowers and secret ingredients and is named after the Grande Chartreuse monastery where it was originally produced. There are two main types of Chartreuse – Green Chartreuse and Yellow Chartreuse. The former is coloured green (from extracts including chlorophyll) and the latter is less alcoholic and has milder and sweeter flavours. Yellow Chartreuse is milder and sweeter than the famous Green Chartreuse and was also introduced to the world in 1840
Yellow Chartreuse Liqueur is presented in the traditional Chartreuse liqueur bottle embossed with the seal of La Grande Chartreuse. Its colour is entirely natural with no artificial flavours or preservatives.
Bottled at 43% ABV.
Intense yellow colour with a fresh and spicy nose and a soft structure.
Scents of turmeric, citrus, anise and floral notes extend well onto the finish.
Yellow Chartreuse can be served neat, as a shot, over ice or as a long drink with tonic or soda water.
It is a versatile cocktail ingredient. A classic cocktail is the Alaska. This classic cocktail highlights the herbal notes of Yellow Chartreuse alongside the crispness of gin.
