Description

Maxime Trijol Pineau des Charentes Rouge is a fortified wine made from red grapes. It is produced by Cognac Maxime Trijol, a family-owned distillery.

Cognac Maxime Trijol was founded in 1859. The family originally settled as growers and distillers in St Martial Sur Né, in the heart of the Cognac region. Their first still was installed in November 1859, and since then they have built on their expertise as growers and distillers, becoming professional distillers in 1962. Today, Maxime Trijol has twenty-two 2,500 litre Charentais pot stills and is now one of the largest distillers of Cognac. Unusually for a Cognac producer, Trijol also cultivates its own vines, as well as distilling and ageing Cognac, and can therefore oversee all the steps during the production process: growing the grapes, distillation, ageing and bottling. The current head of the company, Jean-Jacques Trijol, is an artist, wielding his skilful palate through the process of distillation and blending, adapting – sometimes minutely – the spirit he collects from each still and varying his technique slightly depending on the harvest and the wine. Jean-Jacques was joined by his two daughters, Anne-Sophie and Pauline, in 2013, who now run the company.

Pineau des Charentes is a French fortified wine, technically a “mistelle”, from the Charente and Charente-Maritime regions. It is made by blending freshly pressed grape juice with Cognac and then ageing it in oak barrels. It comes in two main types: white, which is lighter and more floral, and red, which is richer and more robust.

Pineau des Charentes Rouge, a less common variant compared to the more popular white version, is typically made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes. The grapes are lightly pressed to preserve the quality of the juice, which is then mixed with Cognac eau de vie and aged for at least one year. This addition halts fermentation, resulting in a fortified wine with an alcohol content between 16% and 22%. The wine must then be aged for a minimum of 14 months in oak barrels. Maxime Trijol Pineau des Charentes Rouge follows this process, producing a richly flavoured and distinctive fortified wine.
