Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum is a premium Bermudan rum and the oldest expression in the Goslings range. It is made only in small batches and uses the same blend as the iconic Goslings Black Seal Rum, but is aged for between 16 and 19 years.
The result is a rich and complex rum, with notes of chocolate, leather, vanilla and a long, warming spicy finish. Best enjoyed as a sipping rum, neat or over ice. It is notable for being the only rum bottled in a Champagne bottle.
Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum Production
Goslings Rum was founded in Bermuda by James Gosling in December 1806. He had set sail for America to sell the ship’s £10,000 cargo, but, as the ship’s charter expired during the voyage, he ended up at the nearest port, which happened to be Bermuda. Gosling set up shop and moved into the company’s iconic Front Street premises in 1824, a store that they maintained for the next 127 years.
What was to become Goslings rum was first formulated and sold from the Front Street premises in 1857. It was sold from the barrel, and customers would bring in bottles to be filled up with some of the smooth “Old Rum”. Eventually, Goslings found a ready supply of empty Champagne bottles, reclaimed from the local British Officers’ Mess. The bottles were sealed with cork and dipped in black wax.
The “Old Rum” came to be known as Black Seal Rum due to the black wax used to seal the bottle and not the barrel-juggling black seal on the label. This came much later. In fact, the Black Seal logo, a play on words, was designed by family member, and Olympic diver, Francis “Goose” Gosling in 1949.
Nose: Intense and concentrated, offering deep aromas of dark treacle, burnt sugar, and toasted hazelnuts, followed by a hint of medicinal spice and dried orange peel.
Palate: A massive, full-bodied arrival. Despite the heat, it reveals a surprising richness of butterscotch, espresso, and spicy cinnamon. The mouthfeel is oily and coating, typical of its pot-still heritage.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, leaving a lingering trail of charred oak, vanilla, and sweet tobacco.
Great neat or over ice, but also good in cocktails.
