Pusser’s Rum Select Aged 151 is the “Green Label” Pusser’s Rum. This overproof rum is bottled at 151 Proof, i.e. 75.5% ABV. Buy this and all of the Pusser’s Rums at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Pusser’s Rum is produced by Demerara Distillers Ltd in Guyana and is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years, sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day” or Black Tot Day), and the Pusser’s Rum name lay quietly dormant until 1979.
In the late 1970s, Canadian-born entrepreneur and ex-Marine Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition. Tobias entered into negotiations with the Royal Navy and was eventually given the permissions he needed, the right to use the White Ensign, along with the blend of rum issued by the Royal Navy. Tobias originally wanted to call the new project Royal Navy Pusser’s Rum but, due to various legal reasons, settled on British Navy Pusser’s Rum.
The new company, Pusser’s Rum Ltd, was set up on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the first time. In return, The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund”, receives a donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum to this day.
Pusser’s Rum Select Aged 151 “Green Label” is a 100% Demerara, Guyanese rum that has been aged for a minimum of 3 years in once-used ex-Bourbon casks. One of the main components of the rum is produced from the Port Mourant still, the legendary double wooden pot still at the Diamond Distillery (owned by Demerara Distillers Ltd). It is bottled at “cask strength”, as close as possible to the rums that would have been shipped to Royal Naval Stores in Deptford, Gosport and Devonport for blending and dilution to proof. The blend of rums in this special rum is produced following Admiralty regulations for rum in effect at the time that the Royal Navy discontinued the daily issue.
Pusser’s 151 was launched in the UK in 2021 and is the strongest Pusser’s rum released. However, a very similar rum had been available on the German market for many years. This was a blue-labelled rum bottled at 150 Proof / 75% ABV. In Germany, it is primarily used as a float in cocktails as, due to the high ABV, it floats on top of the other cocktail ingredients to add a layer of flavour and for presentation purposes (or for setting fire to!). Try it in tiki-type cocktails like a Zombie (see the to serve tab).
From Pusser’s
Colour: Rich chestnut mahogany colour, crystal clear clarity.
Nose: The aroma is a burst of classic Demerara with marmalade, marzipan, cinnamon and tobacco.
Body: Full and very rounded with notes of syrupy spice and fruit, leather, dried sultanas and soft oak.
Finish: Warm, smooth, long and memorable.
Obviously, this overproof rum is very strong at 75.5% ABV. Try with a few drops of water or an ice cube, this will help open up the aromas and flavours. If you are brave, or perhaps foolish enough, drink it neat, but take care!
