Angostura Tamboo Spiced Spirit Drink 40% is a spiced rum produced by Trinidad Distillers Limited in Trinidad and Tobago. It is a blend of Trinidadian rum and carefully selected Caribbean spices.
The House of Angostura was founded in 1824 in the Venezuelan town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar) by a German doctor, Dr Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, Surgeon-General in Simon Bolivar’s army in Venezuela. Around 1820, he created Angostura Bitters as a medicine to improve the appetite and digestive well-being of the soldiers. The family moved to Trinidad in 1875, and the company became famous and prospered through the sale of their bitters. It wasn’t 1949 when Trinidad Distillers Limited was established, with a state-of-the-art multi-column commercial distillery located in Laventille, that they seriously got into rum production (although the Siegert family had been blending rums since the 1900s).
Angostura Tamboo Spiced Spirit Drink is a fine golden spiced rum is blended using Caribbean spices (cardamom, clove and cinnamon). The label is an homage to the bright and colourful Carnival spirit of Trinidad and Tobago, with its carnival-inspired design, raised gold text and a wooden cork stopper. It is named Tamboo after the bamboo drum that Carnival beats on the island since 1884. If you’re looking for a spirited, spice-forward rum to enhance cocktails or add carnival vibes to your bar, Tamboo is a great addition.
If you are wondering why this is called “spiced spirit drink” and not “spiced rum”, under UK law, the term “rum” can only be used to describe a spirit that is made from sugarcane or molasses. Spiced rum is made by adding spices and other flavourings to rum so it cannot be called rum. It is called Tamboo Spiced Rum in other markets. Go figure, eh?
