About Pussers Gunpowder Proof Spiced

Pussers Gunpowder Proof Spiced is based upon the company’s  Pussers Gunpowder Proof Rum. This is a blend of rums produced in column and pot stills at Diamond Distillers Ltd in Guyana and bottled at an alcoholic strength of 54.5% ABV. After distillation, the rum is filtered and aged for a minimum of three years in once-used charred oak bourbon barrels and then further enhanced with a unique blend of Caribbean spices. This is a secret blend, of course, but there are certainly nuances of banana, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and chocolate (and probably other bits and pieces). There is plenty of banana character on the nose with chocolate on the palate, but the power of the Gunpowder rum character still shines through.

To those of you who remember the old Pusser’s red-label spiced rum bottles at 35%, this is nothing like it. This is a far superior spiced rum with a much improved, more balanced selection of herbs and spices with the wonderful power of the Gunpowder Proof Rum.

About Pusser’s Rum

Pussers Rum is produced at the Demerara Distillers Ltd distillery in Guyana and is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a Purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day”) and the Pusser’s Rum name quietly lay dormant until 1979 when the entrepreneur Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition.

Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pussers Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the very first time. In return, The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund”, receives a substantial donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum.

What is Gunpowder Proof Rum?

The term “Gunpowder Proof” refers to the traditional method that was used by the Royal Navy to test the strength of their rum. The rum would be mixed with gunpowder and if the mixture could still ignite when lit, it was considered to be “proof” of its strength. Therefore, the ship’s Purser ( aka Pusser) could make sure that he was not being sold watered-down rum.

Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Spiced is bottled at 54.5% ABV, the same proof used by the British Navy.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Clear, dark coppery amber colour with burnished copper highlights

Nose: There are aromas of rich molasses, followed by ripe banana and a hint of chocolate. There are nuances of vanilla with cinnamon and a touch of ginger which bring a subtle spiced lift.

Palate: Full and intense, the high alcohol strength powers through with molasses and banana upfront, layered with dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla softness. Cinnamon and ginger spices weave in, adding warmth and complexity without overwhelming the rum’s core.

Finish: Long and remarkably smooth for its 54.5% ABV with warming, lingering finish.

To Serve

This is great served near or over ice or mixed with ginger beer or cola in a highball glass over ice, garnished with a lime wedge or orange slice.

It is also great in cocktails, try in a Spiced Mai Tai or Rum Old Fashioned.

It can also be served in a Hot Spiced Toddy, a cozy, seasonal drink that is ideal for chilly evenings:

Gently heat 6cl of rum with 12cl of hot apple cider or water, a cinnamon stick and a teaspoon of brown sugar, serve in a mug.

Avoid boiling—keep it below 74°C to retain the alcohol and flavours.
For extra richness add a knob of butter!
