Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey is the quintessential blended Irish Whiskey. It is a blend of Pot Still and Grain Whiskies.
Powers Irish Whiskey is a historic brand with roots dating back to 1791, when James Power, an innkeeper from Dublin, founded a small distillery at his public house on Thomas Street. Initially known as James Power and Son, it evolved into John Power & Son by 1822, relocating to John’s Lane. This site became renowned for its single pot still whiskey, a style unique to Ireland, made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley and triple-distilled in copper pot stills. This style is celebrated with the company’s Single Port Still release, the Powers John’s Lane and Three Swallow releases.
By the late 1800s, Powers and three other Irish Distillers (John Jameson, William Jameson, and George Roe) became known as “The Big Four” and were some of the largest distillers in the world. Rather than sell its whisky to other merchants and bonders to bottle the whisky themselves, Powers became the first Dublin distillery to bottle their own whiskey themselves. A gold label was used, and Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey was born.
By the 1960s, the whiskey trade was struggling, and Powers joined together with Cork Distilleries Company and John Jameson & Son to form Irish Distillers. Production was moved to the New Midleton Distillery in 1975. Irish Distillers were taken over in 1989 by Pernod-Ricard and remain a subsidiary of the French drinks company. Today, there are four expressions: Gold Label, an Irish Rye, Three Swallow and the single Pot Still John’s Lane release.
Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey is a triple-distilled blend of pot still and grain whiskey. The whiskey is cut from the heart of the distillate (hence “Distiller’s Cut” on the label). This means that more of the tops and tails are discarded than any other Irish whiskey. The whiskey is then left to mature in ex-bourbon American Oak casks.
It is bottled, non-chill filtered, at 43.2% ABV
From Powers:
Nose: Cinnamon, clove oil and white pepper in balance with russet apples and ripe pears, on a back-ground of charred oak.
Taste: Cinnamon, green peppers and a touch of nutmeg combined with orchard fruits, vanilla and toasted oak. All laid upon a crisp barley core.
Finish: Long Pot Still oils and spices slowly fade to rich barley, toasted wood and a wonderfully complex honey flavour.
Can be served neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails. Try in an Irish Whiskey Sour.
