Powers Johns Lane Release 12 Year Old Whisky celebrates the origin of the Powers whiskey tradition and provides a glimpse of the whiskey style that made Powers famous. It is a benchmark Single Pot Still Irish whiskey and is named after the historic John’s Lane Distillery in Dublin, where Powers whiskey was originally produced.
Today, Powers Irish Whiskey is produced at the New Midleton Distillery by Irish Distillers, a subsidiary of the French drinks company Pernod Ricard. The brand has a long history of over two centuries. It was originally founded in 1791 by James Power, an innkeeper from Dublin, and is thought to be the very first Irish Whiskey to be bottled. Today there are four expressions: Gold Label, an Irish Rye, Three Swallow and this one, John’s Lane.
This single pot still Irish whiskey is a testament to Ireland’s rich distilling heritage. It is crafted from a unique blend of malted and unmalted barley and undergoes a meticulous triple distillation in traditional copper pot stills. Powers Johns Lane Release 12 Year Old Whisky takes this time-honored process a step further, discarding additional portions of the less refined “heads” and “tails” to ensure exceptional quality.
The pot still distillate is matured for not less than 12 years, mainly in first fill American oak casks, with a small contribution of distillate which has been matured in Oloroso sherry butts. The result Powers John’s Lane Release 12 Year Old Whisky is a Single Pot Still whiskey of outstanding flavour and complexity which provides a fitting tribute to the legacy of James Powers, whose whiskey once reigned as Ireland’s most popular.
