Teeling Revival II 13 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a limited edition whiskey that was released in 2016. The Revival range was first launched in 2015 to celebrate the opening of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery. The first edition, Teeling Revival I was a 15 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey aged in ex-Rum barrels. The Teeling Revival II is aged for 13 years and is finished in ex-Calvados Casks for 18 months.
The Teeling Whiskey Distillery is the first distillery to be built and opened in Dublin for over 125 years. Teeling Whiskey Company is a new independent Irish whiskey company. It is owned by the Teeling family who have a long history of distilling in Ireland stretching back to 1782. More recently John Teeling founded Cooley Distillery in 1987 which is responsible for producing Irish Whiskey brands including Kilbeggan, Connemara, Tyrconnell and Greenore. Cooley Distillery was sold to American Spirits giant Beam Inc in 2012, which was since bought by Suntory to become Beam Suntory. Crucially the Teelings were able to secure a good amount of young and ageing whiskey as part of the deal to enable them to establish the Teeling Whiskey Company in 2012. After the sale of Cooley Distillery there was been a big hole in the Irish Whiskey landscape for a good independent Whiskey brand. Teeling felt that, although Irish Whiskey is one of the fastest growing spirits categories in the world, there was not much variation in terms of styles or flavours. The Teeling Whiskey Company have set out to change this by producing small batch whiskeys with great personality and character through their use of different oaking regimes. Thus the Teeling Blended Whiskey is finished in ex Nicaraguan rum casks and their fantastic Grain whiskey is finished in ex-red wine casks from California.
As mentioned above, the Teeling Revival II is aged for 13 years and finished in ex-Calvados Casks for 18 months before it is bottled at 46% ABV without colouring or chill filtration to preserve mouthfeel and flavour. It is a very unusual Irish whisky, really like a cross between an Irish whiskey and a Calvados. Apparently used Calvados casks do not become available very often and I think this is the first time I have seen a whiskey with a Calvados cask finish.
Check out my tasting notes, I was lucky enough to get to try this when I visited Teeling Whiskey Distillery in 2016.
