Mackmyra Vinterdrom Swedish Single Malt Whisky is part of Mackmyra’s fantastic range of limited edition whiskies known as Mackmyra Seasons. As well as Vinterrok (Winter Smoke) the rest of the range includes Blomstertid (Blossom time), Sommartid (Summer Time), Midvinter (Mid Winter), Midnattssol (Midnight Sun) and Iskristall (Ice Crystal). Due to the limited edition nature of all of these whiskies, it reallyis a case of grabbing them whilst one can, they don’t hang around for very long. All of these have unusual cask finishes which have included casks that have held birch sap wine, cherry wine, Pedro Ximenez Sherry and Bordeaux wine.

Mackmyra Vinterdrom Swedish Single Malt Whisky is collaboration with the rum producer / bottler Plantation Rum and it is a limited edition bottling finished in a combination of ex Barbados and Jamaican Rum casks. A few whisky producers finish their whisky in rum casks. Off the top of my head I can think of the Balvenie Carribean Cask and Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21 Year Old Scotch Whiskies and Teeling Small Batch Blended Irish Whiskey. The rum cask finish certainly brings a rum character of burnt sugar, caramel and other hints of rum to the Vinterdrom.

Mackmyra is still a fairly young distillery. It was founded by in 1999 by eight classmates from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm with the first commercial whisky coming on stream in 2002. Read more here.
