Omar Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky is a Taiwanese single malt whisky made by the Nantou Distillery. It is owned by the TTL Group (the state owned Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Cooperation) and is located in the north west of Nantou County. The distillery was founed in 1978 although it wasn’t until 2008 that whisky production commenced and Omar Single Malt Whisky was first released in 2015. It is the second distillery on the island of Taiwan after Kavalan.

The TTL Group has been managed by Mr Pan, a director with an unusual and international career. He joined the group in the nineties, working in the wine department where he acquired an undeniable knowledge of the alcohol industry. Eventually he came to play a major role within the R&D department and was dispatched to travel the world to find out about the worlds best alcholic beverages. Via Japan (sake and shochu), France (wine) and Germany (beer), Mr Pan finally arrived in Scotland with their world famous whisky. Mr Pan returned to Nantou Distillery in 2012 and set about creating a new Taiwanese whisky. Omar is a tribute to Scotland and its know-how and the name means “amber” in Gaelic – just like the colour of the whisky.

Omar whisky is made from pure barley and is made using pure, clean water from the mountains (the Bagua mountain range) surrounding the distillery which is equipped with  4 pot stills made by Forsyths of Rothes in Scotland. The subtropical climate of Taiwan means the the ageing process is accelerated compared to northern climes, like Scotland or Ireland, and the loss to evaporation, the angel’s share, is much higher (about 5% a year). Omar Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky is finished in ex Sherry cask and is bottled non chill filtered at 46% abv.
