If you have a crowd on board or you just want some wine to stow away and don’t want to (ahem) push the boat out, here is a great selection of classic wines. There is a red and a white wine from Baron Phillipe de Rothschild: a light, fruity and fresh Pinot Noir and a peachy, dry Viognier. There is also a super-quaffable Rioja from the always reliable Bodegas Urbina and a zippy, fresh and mineral white Bordeaux.
A 12 bottle selection, 3 bottles of each of the following wines:
White
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Viognier, Pays D’Oc
A fine, deep golden, the wine has an intense nose displaying a highly complex mix of fresh and preserved fruit aromas (apricot, peach, quince jelly) with some attractive floral notes. Very round on the palate, it combines powerful flavours with a rich and expansive structure to give a pleasant impression of fullness.
Chateau Vrai Caillou “Les Vignes de la Gerene”, Bordeaux AC, Michel Pommier
70% Sauvignon Blanc with some Semillon and Muscadelle. This is a beautifully fresh wine, it is a pale golden colour with green reflections. There are floral notes, green figs and hints of melon on the nose. The palate has flavours of peach, lemony citrus and a fresh, crisp finish. Ideal with many fish dishes.
Red
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Pinot Noir, Pays D’Oc
Cherry-red in colour with a refined nose which opens on pleasant aromas of red fruit (morello cherry, blackcurrant) and violet, mingled with some slightly smoky, mineral notes. On the palate, a well-rounded structure elegantly combines with highly refined flavours in a fresh, round and generous whole, building to a rich and silky finish that reveals substance, roundness and attractively fruity length.
Urbina Tempranillo Rioja
Bright, cherry red colour. The nose is aromatic and fruity with mainly red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries with some floral notes too. These aromas follow on to the palate with more summer fruit characters and a hint of spice and liquorice. The palate is medium bodied with soft tannins and a very fresh finish.
