Description

Borgo dei Trulli Signor P Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG is a sweet red dessert wine produced from grapes sourced from a small 0.4 hectare parcel in Roselle in the commune of Maruggio (Taranto province).

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli, to give it its full name, is a new wine venture made by Orion Wines, a company created to bring together interesting wines from small growers and wineries from all over Italy. The company was created by Luca Pomaro and winemaker Alessandro Michelon with the premise of producing wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown. The Masseria Borgo dei Trulli estate is located in the heart of Salento and is owned and managed by Orion wines with Alessandro Michelon as head winemaker. Around 80% of the wine produced at the estate is red wine produced from Negroamaro and Primitivo with some white wine, including Vermentino.

As mentioned above, the grapes for the Borgo dei Trulli Signor P Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG come from a small 0.4 hectare parcel in Roselle near the winery, in the commune of Maruggio (Taranto province). The vines are “Alberelli Pugliesi” or free-standing bush vines. The average yield is less than 300g per plant. The plants are around 100 years old. The grapes are late harvested in the second half of September, when they have reached the right level of natural appassimento, losing approximately 50% of their water content.

After de-stemming, the grapes are not crushed, leaving the skins whole. During fermentation which takes place at a controlled temperature of 23-25°C, pumping over and rack and return are carried out to extract colour and soft tannins. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for approximately 10-15 days when it is halted naturally by lowering the temperature to avoid all of the sugars being converted into alcohol. After racking, malolactic fermentation is induced. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked and placed in second passage French oak barriques for 10 months.

Borgo dei Trulli Signor P Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale is only produced in the best vintages. 493 bottles were produced in the 2020 vintage.

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is named after the traditional Apulian dry stone huts with a conical roof. These are known as a “trullo” or “trulli” in the plural and feature in the brand logo.

Tasting Notes

Borgo dei Trulli Signor P has an intense and brilliant red colour with purple highlights. Rich and complex bouquet, with notes of dried figs, dates and black cherry jam and delicate spicy notes. It is harmonious and balanced with surprising freshness, accompanied by sweet and supple tannins, with hints of candied fruit, honey and notes of chocolate. A long finish, with a touch of liquorice.

Food Pairing

Traditionally served with chocolate or almond pastries, but it is also excellent with mature cheese.
