Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay, unlike other Tokay wines, is made from ripe, sweet, late-harvested grapes rather than grapes that have been affected by noble rot.
Just after the fall of Communism, the Royal Tokaji Wine Company was founded by a group of foreign investors. The group of investors included the highly regarded wine writer and historian Hugh Johnson. In 1990 this was some of the very first foreign investment permitted in the country after Communism had fallen. The investors began working with 62 Hungarian winegrowers whose vineyards are located in and around the village of Mád in northeastern Hungary.
From the beginning, the goal of the Royal Tokaji Wine Company was to concentrate on producing only the best Aszu wines with a sweetness level of 4 puttonyos or more. Using the Tokay classification of 1700 as their guide to the finest terroirs, the association of growers and investors produced their first vintage in 1990. The company is also committed to producing some of the finest single-vineyard wines made from the first growth vineyards. As well as fantastic sweet Tokay wines, they also produce some excellent dry white wines.
This late harvested wine was previously labelled as Áts Cuvée, named after Royal Tokaji’s Winemaker of the Year 2006, Károly Áts. It is currently labelled as Mad Cuvée in the USA but it is called Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay in the UK and the rest of the world.
Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay is made from a blend of Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat de Lunel grape varieties. The grapes were harvested in October and at the beginning of November. After pressing, the settled juice was fermented in tanks, and then the majority of the blend was transferred to barrels for five to six months of ageing.
This is a lighter and fresher style of dessert wine compared to other Tokay and is designed for early drinking.
Pale gold colour with delicate citrus and spicy aromas. Light and refreshing on the palate with hints of white peach and honey. It has an excellent acid balance, a smooth, silky texture, and a clean, long, crisp finish.
Delicious on its own, as an aperitif, or with spicy cuisine
such as Thai, fresh fruits, or any fruit-based dessert. Serve cool.
