Stanton and Killeen Classic Rutherglen Topaque is an Australian sweet wine with an average age of 12 years old. In Rutherglen, Topaque is the name for the Muscadelle, a grape variety previously known locally as Tokay.
Stanton and Killeen is a family-owned wine company located in the Rutherglen wine-growing region of Australia. They are famous for their red and Port-style wines but are arguably most famous for the superb dessert wines they produce from Muscat and Topaque.
Now in their seventh generation, the company can trace its origins back to 1850 when Timothy Stanton arrived in Australia from England in search of gold. He soon turned his attention to winemaking rather than prospecting. The two families came together when Norman Killeen married Jack Stanton’s daughter, Joan, and in 1954, she gave birth to sixth-generation winemaker Chris Killeen. In 1968, the business name was changed to ‘Stanton & Killeen Wines’, and thus started a new phase in the history of the winery. Today, the business is owned and managed by mother-daughter team Wendy and Natasha Killeen and has around 86 acres of vineyards, the oldest of which were planted in 1921.
Stanton and Killeen are part of the Rutherglen Network, a group of 8 Rutherglen winemakers along with All Saints, Bullers, Campbells, Chambers, Morris, Pfeiffer and Rutherglen Estates. This is a collection of like-minded wine producers who market and manage the promotion, and ensure the quality of the famous fortified wines of the region is maintained.
Stanton and Killeen Classic Rutherglen Topaque is a glass of liquid gold, copper-gold in colour. There are aromas of malt, caramel, butterscotch and almonds. Full flavoured with layers of complexity and tastes of caramelised butter, malt, dried apricot, dried fruits with a long finish of marmalade and lemon / orange oil.
This Australian sweet wine is a great match with pate, full-flavoured cheeses, fig tapas and terrines of duck. Can be served chilled.
