Description

Domaine de Coyeux ‘Solera’ Muscat Beaumes de Venise is a sweet white, dessert wine from the eastern central region of the southern half of the Rhône Valley presented here in 37.5cl half bottles. It is a Vin Doux Naturel made exclusively from the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape variety.

This Muscat Beaumes de Venise is produced by Domaine de Coyeux. The winery was founded in 1950 by Yves and Catherine Nativelle. It has been owned by Arnaud and Isabelle Strasser since 2021. The 112 hectare estate is beautifully situated in a prime location on a hill above the village of Beaumes-de-Venise itself and benefits from the region’s Mediterranean climate and the Mistral wind.

Beaumes de Venise lies in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, characterized by jagged peaks of Jurassic limestone. The terroir consists of three types of soil, notably the rocky outcrop known as Le Trias, which produces a unique style of wine. The vines are planted at altitudes of 260 to 300 meters above sea level, where the soil comes from one of the rare outcrops of the Comtadine region’s Trias. The estate grows Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and white Muscat. The Beaumes de Venise wines from Coyeux have been praised by Robert Parker as “superb,” and Gault Millau refers to Coyeux as “the best.”

Adhering to an ethical and ecological philosophy, the estate is undergoing organic conversion and is HVE sustainable certified. By the 2025 vintage, the estate will be fully organic. In the vineyard, vines are disbudded and de-suckered in spring to aerate the plants and increase sun exposure on the leaves. Disbudding reduces grape production while promoting aroma concentration. The grapes are harvested at the end of summer over approximately twenty days, with each plot harvested by hand according to its maturity. Harvesters sort the bunches to ensure only ripe and healthy grapes reach the winery.

Domaine de Coyeux ‘Solera’ Muscat Beaumes de Venise is made from 100% Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grapes. After careful selection for high sugar content and aromatic intensity, the grapes are cold-pressed with stalks and fermented for seven to nine days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at low temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. Fermentation is halted by adding a 95% ABV grape spirit (a process called Mutage), resulting in a wine with an alcoholic strength of 15.5% by volume and 110 grams of sugar per litre.

This wine is a Solera wine, created using a fractional ageing system similar to that used in Sherry. The base for this wine is the 2008 vintage, which is “refreshed” each year with newer wines. This fractional blending process results in a dessert wine with layered complexity, combining traditional sweetness with balanced freshness from the younger vintages.

The mutage process in Muscat de Beaumes de Venise contributes to its distinct flavour profile, characterized by intense aromatics, rich fruitiness, complexity, and a delightful balance between sweetness and acidity. This versatility makes it suitable for pairing with both savoury and sweet dishes.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

This wine replaces the old Cuvée Les Trois Fonts label.

Tasting Notes

Domaine de Coyeux ‘Solera’ Muscat Beaumes de Venise is a deliciously sweet wine, with aromatic notes of ripe tropical fruits, complemented by fragrant, fresh fruits and smoky overtones. Rich, smooth and sweet on the palate, beautifully balanced by freshness and elegance.

Food Pairing

Sweet Muscat wine should be served very cold (6 to 8°C). It is a good aperitif but goes well throughout the meal.

It pairs well with melon, foie gras and cooked oyster dishes. It also matches roast chicken.

For dessert, try with coffee cakes, red fruit gratins and pineapple puff pastries with raspberry coulis.

For the cheeseboard, try with blue cheese such as Roquefort, or Stilton.
