Description

Cossart Gordon 1962 Bual Vintage Madeira is a rare and exquisite single-harvest masterpiece from one of Madeira’s most historic houses. This medium-rich, profoundly complex wine delivers an intense bouquet of caramelised orange peel, dried figs, dates, honey, balsamic notes, spices, dark chocolate, and cedar, balanced by vibrant acidity and an extraordinarily long, lingering finish that reveals endless layers of depth and freshness. Perfect as a birth year gift for anyone celebrating a significant anniversary from 1962.

Cossart Gordon: The Oldest Shippers of Madeira Wine

Cossart Gordon Madeira traces its origins to 1745, when it was founded by Scotsmen Francis Newton (who arrived in Madeira on September 12, 1745) and his brother Thomas, along with Thomas Murdoch (or sometimes listed as Thomas Gordon in related accounts). An Irishman, William Cossart, joined the firm in 1808 and, by the late 19th century, the company had expanded into a broad wine trade encompassing Port, Sherry, Marsala and Malaga. It continued this diversified approach until the start of World War II, after which it specialised exclusively in Madeira.

Integration Into The Madeira Wine Company (MWC)

In 1953, Cossart Gordon became part of the Madeira Wine Association, which was restructured and renamed the Madeira Wine Company (MWC) in 1989. The MWC operates as a partnership between two prominent Anglo-Portuguese wine families: the Blandys and the Symingtons (renowned for their Port houses such as Dow, Warre, Graham, and Cockburn). This collaboration continues today; in 2011, the families signed an agreement granting the Blandy family a controlling interest in the MWC, with the Symingtons retaining a minority shareholding. Today, the MWC owns several historic Madeira brands, including Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon, Leacock’s and Miles.

Cossart Gordon Vintage Madeira

Cossart Gordon Vintage Madeiras are aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years before being bottled under the supervision of the Madeira Wine Institute. Their Vintage Madeiras, also known as Frasqueira, then receive an additional two years of bottle ageing before release.

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter. It makes an ideal wedding or anniversary present.

Understanding Madeira Styles and Grape Varieties

Traditionally, Madeira wines vary in style and sweetness depending on the grape variety used:

  • Sercial – The driest style
  • Verdelho and Terrantez – Medium-dry style (rarer varieties)
  • Bual (Boal) – Medium-rich style
  • Malvasia (Malmsey) – The richest and sweetest style

Cossart Gordon 1962 Bual Vintage Madeira Winemaking

Cossart Gordon 1962 Bual Vintage Madeira is made from 100% Bual. This wine was aged for 53 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor, where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity, it was bottled.

Bottled 2015. Only 1,104 bottles of this wine were released.

Presented in a 37.5cl half bottle.

Tasting Notes

From Cossart Gordon:

Crafted by Francisco Albuquerque, the Bual 1962 is the perfect example of a world class vintage Madeira. Visually, it’s dark amber colour, with golden hue, greenish rim, and the magnificent slow teardrop, are warm and embracing, calling us to sit down and enjoy. Dense and concentrated, this vintage has the typical bouquet of old Madeira’s. Exuberant on the nose, its bouquet is extremely complex, with noticeable balsamic notes, cedar wood, cigar box, spices, dark chocolate, caramelized orange peel, dried passion fruit, roasted nuts and old brandy. The mouth feel is wonderfully rich, yet vibrantly fresh. Extremely concentrated, and complex, this wine has noticeable notes of spices and resin. The aftertaste is long and lingering, making it a meditation wine.
