Description

Cossart Gordon 1978 Bual Vintage Madeira presented in a 75cl bottle. Perfect as a gift for anyone celebrating a significant anniversary from 1978.

Cossart Gordon Madeira can trace its beginnings back to 1745 when it was founded by three Scotsmen, Francis Newton, his brother Thomas and Thomas Murdoch. An Irishman, William Cossart, joined the firm in 1808 and by the late nineteenth century the company was active in all areas of the wine trade including Port, Sherry, Marsala and Malaga. The company continued in the vein until the start of World War Two when the firm began to specialise only in Madeira. In 1953 Cossart Gordon became a member of the Madeira Wine Association, which, in 1989, become the Madeira Wine Company. The Madeira Wine Company (MWC) is a partnership between two Anglo-Portuguese wine-making families, the Blandy family and the Symington Family.  This partnership continues today and in 2011 the Blandys and the Symingtons signed an agreement giving the Blandy family control of the (MWC). The Symingtons remain minority shareholders and the MWC today owns Blandys, Cossart Gordon, Leacocks and Miles Madeira.

Cossart Gordon Vintage Madeiras are aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years before being bottled under the supervision of the Madeira Wine Institute. Vintage Madeira, also known as Frasqueira, then receive an additional two years bottle ageing before release. Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter. It makes an ideal wedding or anniversary present.

Traditionally Madeira varies in style and sweetness depending on the grape variety that the Madeira is made from. Sercial produces the driest style, the rarer Tarrantez and Verdelho produce a Medium Dry style, Bual (sometimes call Boal) produces a Medium Rich style and Malvasia (also known as Malmsey) produces the richest and sweetest styles.

Cossart Gordon 1978 Bual Vintage Madeira is made from 100% Bual grapes and is a medium rich style of Madeira. These grapes came specifically from the area of Calheta, the warmest and sunniest area on the island of
Madeira. They were harvested by hand in a good harvest in 1978, trodden on using the traditional wooden
lagares and then aged for more than 40 years in the “Canteiro” system (in old oak casks supported on
long wooden beams) in the warehouses of Madeira Wine Company, in Funchal and then later in Caniçal

Presented in a 75cl bottle. Only 1294 bottles were bottled.

Tasting Notes

Clear bright mahogany colour with a golden-green hue. Very characteristic exuberant bouquet, with notes
of spice, tobacco, balsam and cedar type exotic woods. In the mouth it is very powerful, medium sweet,
but with a very fresh, intense and long finnish with hints of a vanilla like spice.
