“I am happy that Fonseca will announce its decision to declare a classic 2024 Vintage release, our smallest and rarest Vintage declaration to date. It has been 7 years since Fonseca declared a classic Vintage Port and the wines from 2024 are of exceptional quality. Fonseca is sought after around the world for its opulence and fresh fruit flavours, and the Fonseca 2024 Vintage is in keeping with the style of the house. It has incredible depth, intensity, persistence and the youthful exuberance can be enjoyed today with friends or allowed to mature in the cellar, assuming bottles are still available.” Adrian Bridge, Managing Director
Fonseca’s Vintage Ports are crafted from three of the Douro Valley’s most iconic quintas:
The vineyards are planted with traditional indigenous grape varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. After careful hand harvesting, the grapes are foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares to maximise extraction while preserving elegance. The wines are then matured in large oak vats before bottling, ensuring the freshness and purity required for long ageing.
Fonseca Vintage Ports are famous for their longevity and ability to evolve over many decades. Fonseca 2024 can be enjoyed young after decanting for its vibrant fruit and floral character, but patient collectors will be rewarded with increasing complexity over 30 to 40 years or more. Store horizontally in a cool, dark cellar or wine cabinet.
Founded in 1815, Fonseca has built its reputation on Vintage Ports of remarkable consistency, shaped by five generations of the Guimaraens family. Its wines are prized for generous, expressive fruit, supple richness, and velvety tannins, with youthful charm that evolves into greater depth and complexity over time. Capable of ageing for decades, Fonseca is firmly established among the great Vintage Port houses.
Intense deep purple-black in colour with an almost opaque core.
The nose is highly expressive, bursting with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, dark cherry and ripe plum layered with violets, wild herbs and subtle exotic spice. Hints of liquorice, cocoa and graphite add further complexity.
The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, delivering wave after wave of rich black fruit supported by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Floral and mineral notes bring freshness and lift, while the finish is long, elegant and beautifully balanced.
