Fonseca 2024 Vintage Port is a magnificent expression of one of Portugal’s most celebrated Port houses. Renowned for producing richly opulent, deeply aromatic and exceptionally long-lived Vintage Ports, Fonseca has spent more than 200 years refining a distinctive house style that combines power, elegance and remarkable ageing potential. Established in 1822, Fonseca is regarded as one of the top-tier Vintage Port producers, with five generations of family ownership helping to build its reputation for consistency and quality. Its flagship Vintage Port is produced only in vintages that meet the house’s exacting standards. The 2024 vintage produced wines of exceptional colour, aromatic intensity and structure, with the balance to develop for many decades. Only 3000 ( litre cases produced.

“I am happy that Fonseca will announce its decision to declare a classic 2024 Vintage release, our smallest and rarest Vintage declaration to date. It has been 7 years since Fonseca declared a classic Vintage Port and the wines from 2024 are of exceptional quality. Fonseca is sought after around the world for its opulence and fresh fruit flavours, and the Fonseca 2024 Vintage is in keeping with the style of the house. It has incredible depth, intensity, persistence and the youthful exuberance can be enjoyed today with friends or allowed to mature in the cellar, assuming bottles are still available.” Adrian Bridge, Managing Director

Winemaking and Vineyards

Fonseca’s Vintage Ports are crafted from three of the Douro Valley’s most iconic quintas:

  • Quinta do Panascal – a highly regarded west- and southwest-facing Douro vineyard on the steep right bank of the Tâvora River, prized for producing rich, velvety, aromatic wines central to its Vintage Port blend, Acquired in 1978, it is one of the first vineyards in the Douro Valley to practise organic viticulture.
  • Quinta de Santo António – a west-facing hillside estate near Quinta do Cruzeiro, a regular contributor to the Vintage Port blend, while now being run as a modern, sustainably managed model vineyard.
  • Quinta do Cruzeiro – this estate has supplied Fonseca since the 1870s and has been part of the Vintage Port blend since 1922. Awarded feitoria status in 1761, it sits on warm west-facing slopes above the Pinhão River and is prized for its fine fruit and firm tannic structure.

The vineyards are planted with traditional indigenous grape varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. After careful hand harvesting, the grapes are foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares to maximise extraction while preserving elegance. The wines are then matured in large oak vats before bottling, ensuring the freshness and purity required for long ageing.

Cellaring Potential

Fonseca Vintage Ports are famous for their longevity and ability to evolve over many decades. Fonseca 2024 can be enjoyed young after decanting for its vibrant fruit and floral character, but patient collectors will be rewarded with increasing complexity over 30 to 40 years or more. Store horizontally in a cool, dark cellar or wine cabinet.
