Graham’s Port, A Douro Legend

W & J Graham’s Port was founded in Oporto, Portugal’s second city, in 1820 by the two brothers William and John Graham and for nearly two hundred years Graham’s Ports have been made by just two families, the Graham’s and the Symingtons – in 1970 the Grahams sold the company to the Symington Family who brought with them their own rich heritage in the Port trade.

The Best Vineyard Sites & Grapes

The quality of Graham’s Port relies on the finest grapes. The company owns and manages extensive vineyard estates, allowing it to have direct control over the quality and sourcing of its grapes. They are primarily sourced from five iconic Quintas in the Douro Valley: Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinta do Tua, Quinta das Lages, and two others, Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas.

Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port Vineyards

The grapes for Graham’s LBV are sourced primarily from Quinta dos Malvedos and Quinta do Tua vineyards, with contributions from Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas – all of which are privately owned by members of the Graham family.

Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port Winemaking

  • Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port is made from grapes selected from the finest production of a very good year.
  • Unlike a ‘declared’ Vintage Port (which is bottled in its second year), LBV is matured for an average of 5 years in seasoned oak casks before bottling (by law, between 4 and 6 years).
  • The term ‘Late Bottled’ refers to this extended maturation period in wood before bottling.
  • This wood ageing encourages the wine’s development, making it a more accessible, earlier-drinking, and approachable alternative to Vintage Port.
  • This wine was matured in wood in Graham’s 1890 lodge for five years before being bottled when ready for drinking.
  • It is a blend of typical Douro grape varieties, mainly Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional.
  • The blend also includes smaller quantities of Sousão, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Amarela, and Tinta Barroca.

Tasting Notes

Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port has lifted, aromatic floral scents, ranging from rose and orange blossom to honeysuckle and just the faintest trace of mint. Following the initial floral veil, red fruit aromas rise gradually to complement the initial floral impressions.

On the palate, intense red fruit flavours form a first wave with tingling, peppery tannins providing a supporting role. Bright acidity offers amazing freshness and vitality.

Food Pairing

Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port can be enjoyed on its own after a meal, perhaps with a good Cuban cigar, like a Romeo Y Julieta No 2.

It also pairs very well with dark chocolate desserts as well as semi-cured and cured cheeses like Cheddar and Manchego. Also great with blue cheeses and is traditionally served with Stilton.

Does not require decanting. Serve at room temperature. Once open, enjoy within 4-6 weeks.

FAQs

Is Graham’s LBV read for drinking?

Yes, late bottled vintage Ports are designed to be ready for immediate drinking.

Does Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage need decanting?

No. This Port is filtered before bottling, so it does not require decanting.

Some LBVs are bottled unfiltered, so that they may throw a sediment and will require decanting before serving.

Graham’s Vintage Port Bond

The Graham’s Vintage Port Bond is an innovative offering that allows individuals to purchase vintage port in the year of its harvest, making it an ideal gift for marking special occasions such as births, weddings, or graduations. It is a “futures” option, a bit like “en primeur.”

Traditionally, vintage port is declared and released approximately 18 months after the harvest, but with the Port Bond, you can secure your allocation in advance. You can choose between a single bottle or a case of six bottles of Graham’s Vintage Port, and in years when only a Single Quinta Vintage is produced, the bond entitles the holder to magnum bottles of Grahams Quinta dos Malvedos instead.
