Niepoort Ruby Port HMS Raleigh Bottling. This is the same as the Niepoort Ruby Port but this is a special bottle produced for HMS Raleigh.

The back of this bottle features a stone-fired label for HMS Raleigh Senior Officers’ and Senior Rates’ Mess featuring their crest, their motto, “Amore et Virtute”, and their address. 

Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. This respected and historic Portuguese winery is known for its exceptional Port wines and table wines. The grapes for the Niepoort Ruby Port are sourced from low-yielding old vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. The grapes are predominantly trodden in old, granite lagares, prior to ageing in large wooden vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Gaia where the Port is bottled with an average age of 3 years. The wine is a typical Douro Field Blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and other grape varieties.

Niepoort Ruby is fresh, young and fruity. An expressive Port with great character. Ruby keeps well for several years, although the wine will not improve with age. No decanting is necessary since the wine contains no sediment.

As mentioned above, this is the same excellent Port as Niepoort Ruby Dum Port, part of Niepoort’s Niepoortland range of Ports, along with the Tawny Dee  and others. We buy it under the plain Ruby label.

There is a minimum printing run, which may be prohibitive, and labels have to be approved by The Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP).
