Baron Philippe de Rothschild Bordeaux rouge is a blend of wines produced in the largest wine-growing area of the Bordeaux region, in the Bordeaux and Bordeaux supérieur appellations. Bordeaux rouge is a blend of typical Bordeaux grape varieties : Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The Merlot is planted on clay-limestone soils which brings nicely concentrated fruit and roundness to the wine, whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc come from sandy, gravelly soils and produce refined wines with very supple tannins. After harvesting grapes are destemmed, crushed then fermented in temperature-controlled vats at controlled to preserve all the expression of the fruit. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in the vats to give the wines a rounder, more supple style. The wines are matured in vats before bottling at Rothschild’s Saint-Laurent-Médoc winery.
