Description

Borgo dei Trulli Lucale is an Italian red wine made from 100% Primitivo grapes from the Communes of Avetrana and Manduria, in the Province of Taranto, southern Puglia. It is an Appassimento wine (meaning that it is made from some semi-dried grapes).

Lucale: Made Using The “Il Giro Del Picciolo” Technique

Borgo dei Trulli Lucale is made using an unusual method that seems to be used only in Italy. In late August, when the grapes have reached ideal maturity, the vineyard workers go through the vineyard and twist the stems of 50% of the bunches of grapes. This effectively stops all nourishment and water from reaching the grapes, thereby allowing the grapes to undergo a natural drying process on the vine. This is known as “il giro del picciolo” – literally “twisting the stem”. Using this method, the grapes can lose approximately 25 to 35% of their weight in water, concentrating the sweetness, complexity, flavours and aromas in the grapes.

Borgo dei Trulli Lucale Vinification

  • Grapes were harvested in early to mid-September.
  • Destemming of grapes, using only free-run juice without crushing.
  • Fermentation in stainless steel vats with remontage (pumping over) and délestage (rack-and-return) for soft aroma extraction and gentle tannins.
  • Post-racking, malolactic fermentation is induced.
  • Approximately 25% of the wine is aged for 6 months in French and American oak barriques.

About Borgo dei Trulli Wines

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is an exciting wine venture created by Orion Wines, founded by Luca Pomaro and acclaimed winemaker Alessandro Michelon. Their mission is simple yet ambitious: produce exceptional wines from indigenous Italian grape varieties that authentically express their terroir.

The estate sits in the heart of Salento, Puglia’s southernmost wine region, where the Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich soils create ideal conditions for viticulture. While approximately 80% of production focuses on red wines from Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, the estate also crafts elegant white wines, including Vermentino.

What Is a Trullo?

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is named after the traditional Apulian dry stone huts with a conical roof. These are known as a “trullo”, or “trulli” in the plural, and feature in the brand logo. These buildings are made without mortar using local limestone and are only found in Puglia’s Itria Valley in southeastern Italy. Their thick, whitewashed walls and small openings provide natural insulation, keeping interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.

Tasting Notes

Borgo dei Trulli Lucale has an intense garnet red colour and a complex bouquet reminiscent of cherries, raspberries and redcurrants. The oak ageing adds a pleasant roasted and spicy aroma. Full-bodied, it is supple and well-balanced, with layers upon layers of dark fruit, fine tannins and a long and lingering finish.

Food Pairing

Try Lucale with roasted red meats like lamb or beef, game such as wild boar, or hard cheeses like aged Pecorino or a good, mature cheddar.

Its full-bodied, velvety texture and fine tannins also complement rich pasta dishes like spaghetti Bolognese, smoky grilled eggplant Parmesan or classic pizzas.
