Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella is bottled as a DOCG wine. Please that from the 2015 vintage this wine also has the name “Marne 180” added to the label. Marne refers tot he soil type whilst 180 refers to the aspect of the vineyard.
The Tedeschi Family wine business can trace their roots back to 1824 when Nicolo Tedeschi purchased several vineyards (although the family have records of owning vineyards back to 1630). A descendant, Riccardo Tedeschi, purchased vineyards in 1918 which included Monte Fontana and their famous Amarone vineyard, Monte Olmi. Today Tedeschi remains a family business and, through a combination of tradition and innovation, is one of the foremost wineries, and one of the top producers of Amarone and Recioto wines, in the Veneto region. The family manages 74 hectares of vineyards, of which 29 are family owned. Amarone della Valpolicella is considered to be the most prestigious wine of the Veneto region.
Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is made from grapes harvested around the Valpolicella Classico zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills) and it is a blend of Corvina 30%, Corvinone 30%, Rondinela 30% and 10% other varieties (Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara, and Dindarella.). Grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September / beginning of October, and are placed in wooden or plastic trays for drying. Drying is done in fruit storage structures at controlled humidity and temperature. This prevents the occurrence of Botrytis cinerea (Noble Rot). Bunches, during the drying process, lose 30% of their weight and sugar concentration reaches 25% by weight. Bunches must be in good health at the end of the drying process (after about 4 months). To ensure this they must be periodically inspected during the drying period and particularly during the first month. In January the grapes are gently pressed by a roller press. Fermentation takes place in steel vessels at a temperature of 15°C and with slow 40-day steeping and the the wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. At the end of fermentation the wine is put into Slavonian oak barrels aged for about 3 years. Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is then aged at least 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Both Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella (the sweet red wines from the region) were promoted from a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) to a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) in 2009.
This wine is vegetarian and vegan friendly.
From Tedeschi:
Colour: Strong ruby red. Clear and transparent.
Bouquet: Notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes.
Flavour: Wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance. It has an enduring and persistent flavour.
Great with any red meat, game dishes or mature cheeses. It can also match well with dark chocolate and dark chocolate desserts.
