Description

Caliterra Edicion Limitada M is, as the name suggest a limited edition wine made from grapes sourced from the Colchagua, Aconcagua and Maule valleys. The blends vary quite a lot from vintage to vintage. The Caliterra Edicion Limitada M 2013 is a blend of 63% Syrah, 23% Grenache, 13% Carignan and 1% Roussanne. Of course Roussanne is a white grape variety and this sort of blend, with a touch of juice from white grapes, is an homage to Rhone-style wines that quite often have a small proportion of white grapes in them.

Caliterra was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the families of Robert Mondavi and Vina Errazuriz. In January 2004 Vina Errazuriz became the sole owners of Caliterra, at the heart of which is the impressive 1000ha Caliterra Estate. The name Caliterra is taken from ‘Calidad’ spanish for quality and ‘Tierra’ – land. The wine making philosophy of Caliterra is to produce fruit driven quality wines. Viña Caliterra is located in the heart of Colchagua, a protected valley southeast of Lago Rapel and adjoining the Apalta Valley, 150 meters above sea level. Crucially a large proportion of this estate, and all new plantings, are on prime hillside sites resulting in high quality fruit and complex wines.

There are 3 wines in the range, the A, B and the M. These letters stand for Andean, Bordeaux and Mediterranean which will give you an idea of what the blend is. As mentioned above, the M is a Mediterranean / Rhone-y blend, the A normally has a good drop of Malbec and / or Carmenere in it, whilst the B or Bordeaux Blend is normally a little drier, Cabernet Sauvignon dominated wine.

The grapes for the Caliterra Edicion Limitada M are sourced from the Caliterra, Las Vertientes and El Sauzal Vineyards. 81% in stainless steel tanks and 19% in barrels of 2nd use. 100% aged for 18 months in barrels. 12% first use “demi muids” barrels, 23% concrete egg, 5% amphoras, 60% third to fifth used barrels.
