Chateau Barde-Haut is a St Emilion Grand Cru property owned by the Garcin family, who are also the owners of several other Bordeaux chateaux including Chateau Branon, Clos d’Eglise and Chateau Haut-Bergey. It is located to the east of the village of St Emilion itself and next to Troplong Mondot and La Mondotte.
Chateau Barde-Haute was purchased by Vignobles Garcin in 2000 but the history of the Chateau stretches back over 250 years. The 17 hectare estate is located in a south-facing amphitheatre overlooking the Dordogne valley, it has a limestone base that is covered with a superb, very robust layer of clay. When the clay is saturated with water, the limestone absorbs the surplus and stores it, making it available again to the vines again in the event of a drought. The vineyards are planted with mainly Merlot with some Cabernet Franc. Around 70,00 bottles of the Grand Vin, the Chateau Barde-Haut St Emilion Grand Cru are produced each vintage. The grapes are hand picked and are fermented in a combination of concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is matured in French oak barrels (80% new) for 18 to 24 months, depending on vintage, to add complexity and depth.
