Every stage of the wine production of this unoaked, Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon takes place at the chateau, from pressing and fermentation to maturation.
Chateau Changyu Moser XV is one of their high-end operations. The winery is located near Yinchuan in the Ningxia wine region. It is a joint venture, opened in 2013, between Changyu and Lenz M. Moser, the 5th generation of the Austrian winemaking Moser Family. Originally, the focus had always been on producing European, and particularly French-style wines.
Today, they have stepped out of Bordeaux’s shadow and are confidently carving out a distinctive identity. By listening closely to their own terroirs, they are crafting wines that feel authentic, original and unmistakably Chinese, something genuinely new and self-assured.
Chateau Changyu Moser XV is located in Ningxia, China’s newest wine-growing area, in the Helan Mountain Range, located in Central Western China on the fringes of the Gobi Desert and close to the Yellow River. This is quite an arid area, but with good sunlight hours, allowing the grapes to ripen fully.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1100m, and the warm days are coupled with cool nights, which means the resulting wine retains freshness. The desert climate yields small berries as the vine protects itself from evaporating water, resulting in a high skin-to-juice ratio and intense flavours.
The Changyu Pioneer Wine Co. Inc. is China’s oldest, largest and most dynamic Chinese wine company. Changyu can trace its history back to 1892 when cuttings from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Alsace were planted by Chinese businessman and politician Cheong Fatt Tze (Zhang Bishi). European winemakers were employed, and China’s first “European” style vineyard was created. Since then, Changyu has managed to keep going, despite being taken over by the state at one point.
Today, Changyu have some 16,667 hectares of vineyards and eight major wineries across regions, including Shandong, Ningxia, Beijing, Liaoning, Xinjiang, and Shaanxi (as well as projects in France, Spain, Chile, and Australia). As well as Changyu Moser wines, other notable brands from the same company include Noble Dragon, Purple Air Comes from the East and Koya Chinese Brandy.
Perfect for lovers of Chinese wine, unoaked Cabernet Sauvignon and elegant, unoaked red wines, this bottle offers exceptional quality and fascinating provenance. Available now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
On the nose, Chateau Changyu Moser XV Helan Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon has generous aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant, plum, and dark forest berries, which intertwine with bright raspberry notes, followed by layers of sandalwood, tobacco leaf and supple leather. Subtle herbal and spicy undertones add complexity and lift.
The palate is medium to full-bodied, delivering vibrant, juicy berry fruit with a savoury, almost meaty depth. Ripe, polished tannins provide elegant structure, while the finish unfolds with lingering floral tones, spicy nuances, and a persistent, harmonious finish. A wine that balances power with refinement.
