Chateau Clerc Milon 2012 is classified as a fifth growth Pauillac in the historic 1855 classification of Bordeaux. The estate is located in an exceptionally favourable situation adjoining both Lafite and Mouton Rothschild.
The history of Chateau Clerc Milon origins stretch back to 1789 when it was part of the vast estates of the seigneury of Lafite. Château Clerc Milon was sold as a “national asset” in the French Revolution when it was acquired by Clerc family. Today Chateau Clerc Milon is owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and was acquired by in 1970 at a time when the estate was quite run down. in 2011 the estate was subsequently reorganised and renovated and has now become one of the most sought-after Bordeaux wines and consistently outperforms its rank. Starting with the 1983 vintage the Clerc Milon label has been illustrated with a pair of dancing clowns made of precious stones, which is owned by the Rothschilds and kept at the Museum of Wine in Art at Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
Today there are 41 hectares of vineyards in the north-east of the Pauillac appellation, on the Mousset crest overlooking the Gironde. They are planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenere. The average age is around 53 years old.
Chateau Clerc Milon 2012 is a blend 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1%
Carmenère.
The wine has a deeper reddish purple colour.
Concentration on the nose is revealed with great refinement and complexity. Black cherry and vanilla aromas give way to deeper, smoky, peaty notes along with blond tobacco and dried flowers.
Refinement is everywhere on the palate as the lush and creamy attack expands over well-integrated tannins to mingle with generous and varied flavours reminiscent of morello cherry and almonds, with a slightly marine cast.
The finish, flavourful and fresh with great tension, displays dark chocolate, saline and mineral notes.
