Description

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, along with Chateau Haut Brion, is considered to be one of the greatest wines of the Pessac Leognan appellation. It was classified among the Crus Classés in the Graves classification of 1953.

The estate’s origins can be traced back to 1540 when the Bordeaux merchant Arnaud de Lestonnac purchased a plot known as Arregedhuys, which would form the beginnings of the estate. The estate passed through various owners including the Lazarists of Bordeaux, also known as the Priests of the Mission, part of the Catholic Church, until the estate was purchased by Frédéric Otto Woltner, another Bordeaux merchant in 1919. It was then then the modern era at Chateau La Mission Haut Brion really began. Woltner’s decendants ran the estate until 1983 when it was sold to today’s owners, the Dillon Family.

The vineyards of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion are located in the communes of Talence and Pessac, just a few miles to the south west of Bordeaux, in the Pessac Leognan appellation in the north of the Graves wine-growing region. The gravelly, quartz soils lie on a single subsoil of clay, sand, limestone and falun (limestone shell).  From 20 centimetres to over 3 metres thick, the gravel deposits form slopes that enjoy excellent exposure, with natural drainage. The vineyard covers an area of 29 hectares (about 72 acres). Nearly 25 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) and just over 4 hectares are devoted to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).

For the main wine, the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, sorted and destemmed. The grapes are placed into vat and gently warmed so that fermentation can begin. Fermentation takes around 2 weeks. The best parcel are selected and then placed in new oak barrels to mature for 20 to 24 months.

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is a blend of 59% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.
