Chateau Les Grands Chenes is a red Bordeaux wine, classified as a Medoc Cru Bourgeois. It is owned by the wine legend Bernard Magrez.
Bernard Magrez has built up a rather enviable portfolio of Bordeaux wine properties. As well as Chateau Les Grands Chenes, he also owns various other famous Bordeaux properties including Château La Tour Carnet, Château Pape Clément, Château Fombrauge and Clos Haut-Peyraguey. There are also interested in other French wine-producing regions and Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Japan, Morocco and California.
Chateau Les Grands Chenes is located at Saint-Christoly-Médoc, a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, on the left bank. It is in the far north of the Bordeaux appellation. The estate has been producing wine since 1880 and was purchased by Magrez in 1998. Of course, Magrez soon began a program of investment and renovation to bring the estate up to his exacting standards. The vineyards are planted around an ancient fortress dating back to the 16th century and and comprise some 38 hectares are planted with 70% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards have gravelly soils and an average vine age is 40 years old. Consulting enologist is Michel Rolland.
After harvest, the grapes for are transferred into thermo-regulated and small stainless steel tanks with a maceration period of 28-30 days. The wine is aged for 16 months prior to release.
Colour: A very dark ruby hue.
Nose: Blackberry and floral aromatics (violets and peonies) and a touch of crushed blackcurrants mingling with delicate hints of liquorice and chocolate.
Palate: Notes of crushed blackberries again, plump strawberries and hints of fleshy, crushed red berries mingling with nuances of blackberries, violets and delicate hints of liquorice.
