Château Les Grands Chênes is a refined and characterful Médoc Cru Bourgeois from the northern Left Bank of Bordeaux. Owned by wine icon Bernard Magrez, this estate produces elegant, Merlot-dominant Bordeaux reds that offer excellent quality and outstanding value.
After a long maceration of 28–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged for 16 months in oak barrels before bottling.
Château Les Grands Chênes is located in Saint-Christoly-Médoc, a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, on the left bank. It is in the far north of the Bordeaux appellation. The estate has been producing wine since 1880 and was purchased by Bernard Magrez in 1998. Magrez soon began an extensive program of investment and renovation to bring the estate up to his exacting standards.
The vineyards are planted around an ancient fortress dating back to the 16th century and comprise some 38 hectares, planted with 70% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards benefit from gravelly soils, and the average vine age is 40 years old. The consulting enologist for the estate is the renowned Michel Rolland.
Bernard Magrez has built up an enviable portfolio of prestigious Bordeaux wine properties. In addition to Château Les Grands Chênes, he owns various other famous Bordeaux estates, including Château La Tour Carnet, Château Pape Clément, Château Fombrauge, and Clos Haut-Peyraguey. The Magrez portfolio also extends into other premier French wine-producing regions, as well as international ventures in Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Japan, Morocco, and California.
