Description

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron, or Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville to give it its full name, is not surprisingly often shortened to Chateau Pichon Baron. It was classified as one of 15 fifteen Second Growths in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 is often classed as one of Bordeaux’s “Super Seconds”.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron was founded in the late 17th Century and was once part of a large estate which also included Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The estate was split into two in 1850. In 1933 the Pichon de Longueville family sold the property to the Bouteiller family, who managed Château Pichon Baron for over 50 years. In 1987 the estate was purchased by French insurance company AXA, who immediately appointed Jean-Michel Cazes of Château Lynch-Bages as administrator. The property is currently managed by Englishman Christian Seely.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron is situated in the southern region of Pauillac near the border of the Saint-Julien-Beychevelle appellation. The estate comprises 73 hectares of high quality gravelly soil. Low in nutrients and with little excess water, this unique soil sparingly nourishes the vines. The vineyards are planted with various plots of 65% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Each plot receives specific care and attention adapted to its particular profile. The estate’s best terroir is known as the “Butte de Pichon Baron” and is devoted entirely to the production of the Grand Vin. It is among the estate’s historic plots and was already in use in 1694 when the wine was first produced.
