Discover the elegance of Château Rocher-Calon 2022 Montagne Saint-Émilion, a beautifully crafted Right Bank Bordeaux that showcases everything wine lovers appreciate about this renowned appellation. Produced predominantly from Merlot with a proportion of Cabernet Franc, this exceptional vintage offers ripe fruit, refined structure and impressive complexity at an accessible price.
Château Rocher-Calon comprises 16.5 hectares of vineyards, with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vines have an average age of 35 years old. The soils are clay and limestone, characteristic of the region.
Château Rocher-Calon is owned by Vignobles Lagardere, which is run by the father and son team of Jean-Claude and Gael Lagardere. The business was founded by Jean-Claude’s grandfather, Pierre, shortly after World War I, when he bought a hectare of land in Pomerol. His son, Yves, expanded the business with the purchase of vineyards in Montagne.
In 1999, Gael began the process of modernising and improving wine production with new, state-of-the-art equipment, temperature-controlled ageing cellars and micro-oxygenation. Today, there are 17 hectares in Montagne and 2.2 hectares in Pomerol. Their estates comprise Chateau Tour Maillet in Pomerol and Chateau Negrit, and this estate in Montagne on Bordeaux’s right bank.

Montagne St Emilion AOC was created in 1936 and is located in the ‘right bank’ Libournais, some five kilometres to the north of St Emilion. It is the largest satellite AOC of St-Émilion satellites, which also include Lussac-Saint-Émilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion, and Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion. The satellite villages offer some of the character of their more prestigious neighbours, but offer much better value for money.
The main grape grown here is Merlot, and it usually makes up 70 to 90% of the blend. Cabernet Franc is often the next grape in the blend, adding aromatic lift and backbone. Some estates have smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes even Malbec.
Also available in 37.5cl half bottles.
Château Rocher-Calon has a deep ruby colour with enticing aromas of ripe blackberries and cherries, complemented by hints of cedar and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, showcasing flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and subtle spice. The finish is long and elegant, with a refreshing acidity that balances the richness. A delightful expression of its terroir,
